The research at the Department of Food Studies, Nutrition, and Dietetics at Uppsala University is interdisciplinary in nature, focusing on exploring the complexity of food and meals for individuals, various groups, and in different contexts, from both natural and social science perspectives. The project will involve the analysis of existing genomic and proteomic datasets. The successful applicant will be responsible for conducting statistical analyses, and for writing and publishing scientific articles. There are two specific research projects that the applicant could spearhead, with flexibility for the applicant to shape the direction of their research to their skillsets and interests.

In the first project, the applicant will explore proteome evolution to understand the effects that speciation and duplication at the level of the protein sequence have on the functional and structural diversity of proteins. The applicant will build protein-level phylogenetic trees to assess the relationship between these processes. The applicant will also examine whether mutational robustness confers an adaptive advantage, by assessing whether the most mutationally robust sequences have undergone the greatest degree of expansion over evolutionary time. In the second project, the applicant will focus on investigating patterns of molecular evolution and mutational robustness that vary with genome structure and gene function, by investigating patterns in the fitness effects of new mutations. The project could also include a consideration of the effects of large-scale genome structure changes, such as variation in genome size.

The Department of Information Technology holds a leading position in both research and education at all levels. The position is hosted by the Division of Scientific Computing (TDB) within the Department of Information Technology. As one of the world’s largest focused research environments in Scientific Computing the research and education has a unique breadth, with large activities in classical scientific computing areas such as mathematical modeling, development and analysis of algorithms, scientific software development and high-performance computing. The division is currently in an expansive phase in new emerging areas such as cloud and fog computing, data science, and artificial intelligence, where it plays key roles in several new strategic initiatives at the University. The division currently hosts 20 PhD students, with more than 90 doctorates awarded. Several PhD alumni from the division are successful practitioners in the field of scientific computing and related areas, in industry as well as in academia.

Applications are sought from highly competent and motivated candidates for a postdoctoral research position to develop and characterize carbon-based electrodes (graphite, hard carbon and porous carbon) intended for application in next-generation batteries. The prospective researcher will participate in a collaborative project involving Uppsala University (UU), industrial partners and research institutes.

The project primarily aims to (1) understand the complex structure of disordered carbon based on experimental data, (2) identify the properties impacting the electrochemical behaviour, and (3) establish the correlation between the structure and electrochemical performance for various types of carbons. With that in mind, the researcher should be familiar with electrochemical concepts and possess expertise in a wide range of materials characterization tools. Most of the research will be conducted in the battery research laboratories which are equipped with state-of-the-art equipment required for materials synthesis, characterization (XPS, Raman spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, thermal analysis and so on), electrode fabrication and cell assembly, and electrochemical testing. A full suite of electron microscopy (SEM and TEM) and surface analysis tools are also available in the cleanroom facility located in the Ångström Laboratory. As 6G networks enable deployments of large-scale, massive IoT and advanced AI-driven
applications, optimizing resource utilization becomes critical. Therefore, it is necessary to develop mechanisms that can accommodate the diverse and dynamic nature of 6G-connected devices while efficiently performing machine learning. In this project, we develop a hierarchical federated learning scheme that enables seamless integration and effective participation across a wide range of devices with various resource constraints. This will allow devices—from small-scale IoT sensors to powerful mobile units—to contribute meaningfully to the learning process.

This project is part of an ERC Consolidator grant (PlastidOrigin) awarded to F. Burki that aims to study one of the most transformative events in eukaryote evolution–the origin of the photosynthetic organelles (the primary plastids) in Archaeplastida. The main aim of this postdoc position is to produce a protein atlas for each organelle of chosen red algale and glaucophyte species using whole-cell spatial proteomics with the hyperLOPIT method. By combining this data to verified proteomes for other archaeplastids, and by searching for homologues in other eukaryotes and prokaryotes, we want to characterize the origin of plastid proteins and the size of the endosymbiotic vs non-endosymbiotic plastid proteomic fractions across archaeplastids.

The main focus of the project will be to investigate the development of stable electrode-electrolyte interfaces, primarily targeted towards, but not limited to, lithium-ion and sodium-ion batteries. This is aimed at enabling the use of safer battery materials, such as next-generation electrode or non-flammable electrolytes. Employing materials considered to be safer, more environmentally-friendly or with otherwise improved sustainability factors often comes at a cost of deteriorated performance. Usually, this is attributed to poor interfacial properties; hence, various strategies will be employed to improve the interfacial stability, in particular the development of polymer-based artificial solid electrolyte interphase (SEI) layers. Electrochemical methods will be used to assess performance of cells, while particular attention will be paid to studying the electrode-electrolyte interfacial reactions using advanced characterisation methods.

The project is part of the competence center AM4Life, which is financed in equal parts by Vinnova, companies and Uppsala University. This project is partially financed by Kanthal whose subsidiary in Florida (Alleima medical) manufactures wire-based components for medical products. The project aims to develop a miniaturized electrochemical sensor to detect various markers in blood. There are several important requirements for the sensor: electrodes in µm scale, good electrical conductivity, large specific surface area and appropriate surface functionalization. Depending on the outcome of different development stages, the project’s orientation will be adapted to achieve the overall goal.

We are looking for a qualified and motivated postdoctoral researcher who will investigate novel astrocyte-mediated spreading mechanisms and inflammatory pathways. The work will primarily be focused on gene editing and studies of cell-to-cell interactions in hiPSC-derived cell systems, but will also include analysis of human material from patients with Alzheimer’s or Parkinson’s disease.

The Petroutsos Lab at Uppsala University is investigating how CO2 acts as substrate for photosynthesis and as signaling molecule in conjunction with light to control cellular homeostasis in microalgae. We are combining genetic, molecular, biochemical, physiological and mathematical modelling approaches to identify factors regulating CO2 capture and partitioning. The lab is looking for a dynamic, self- motivated, team-oriented researcher to support wet lab efforts in understanding molecular mechanisms controlling acclimation of the model microalga Chlamydomonas reinhardtii to changing CO2 and light availability. The successful candidate will work in collaboration with the head of the lab and the team members involved in the project and will also assist in setting up the new lab and in project management.

The researcher will further develop our theoretical methods for simulations of electron energy loss spectroscopy due to magnetic phenomena, such as excitations of magnons or orbital Hall effect. Researcher will also perform simulations within collaborative projects with our partners from laboratories in UK and USA.

The postdoctoral fellow will design, plan, and conduct data collection, including participatory research, interviews, ecological field surveys, and support chemical tissue analyses (of blue foods). The fellow will analyze data and produce high-quality scientific articles suitable for publication in journals, for presentation at scientific conferences and other relevant events. The work should be planned to contribute to the broader goals of the UrbanFishEries project and provide insights for policymakers and fisheries managers. Teaching may also be included in up to 20% of the postdoctoral duties.

The position is part of the project “The Potential of Nuclear Power to Contribute to a Sustainable and Robust Energy System” funded by the Swedish Energy Agency. The position involves research within two of the project’s work packages (WP).

WP1: Future Scenarios for Nuclear Power. This work package aims to compile and evaluate transition scenarios for Sweden’s energy system from various stakeholders. The work also includes developing frameworks for scenario analysis and planning, as well as policy recommendations to address potential goal conflicts regarding nuclear power.

WP2: Geopolitical Risks and Resilience. This work package examines the geopolitical risks of nuclear power in the context of the evolving security landscape, the global energy crisis, and the growing urgency for decisive climate action. The research focuses on identifying geopolitical risks and strategies to manage them, with particular attention to the roles of Russia and China in the nuclear energy market. Implications for aspects such as profitability and construction speed will also be analyzed.

Teaching may be included in the responsibilities, but it will not exceed 20% of the working hours. This could involve teaching in courses such as Energy Security in Local and Global Energy Systems (1GV334), Sustainable Energy Technology (1GV214), or other related energy courses.

The department wishes to appoint a postdoc to conduct research related to dietary challenges among athletes (various target groups, which can be proposed by the candidate), its associations with health and performance, and opportunities for change, particularly with regard to sustainability.

The postdoc is expected to play a leading role in designing and implementing relevant interventions with high practical value, The postdoc will be responsible for analyzing collected data and preparing manuscripts for publication in high-ranking journals. This will be done in close collaboration with other researchers at the department, while the candidate should independently develop their research profile in relation to the department’s overall scientific activities.
