Postdoc  summary/title:–2-yr postdoc on human macroecology in a functional trait perspective Aarhus University

This postdoc project will be part of the ECONOVO research theme 1: Diversity Dynamics, focused on understanding biodiversity dynamics in novel ecosystems (NEs) past and present.
This position is focused on understanding the diverse roles humans might have in ecosystems globally by applying a functional trait perspective that integrates cross-cultural ethnographic idata (from, for instance, D-PLACE), palaeodemography (from, for instance, HYDE), and estimates of human energy consumption. Humans have evolved the unique, culturally and technologically mediated ability to act in multiple different ecological roles – for instance, as foragers, pastoralists, farmers, industrialists – and these variable socio-economic constellations determine their interactions with the environment.

Postdoc  summary/title:–Two Postdoctoral positions in the research project ‘Mobilities, Imaginaries & Articulations (MIA): Revisioning the African City from the Periphery’ at the Department of Anthropology, Aarhus University

Positing the urban periphery as a site of invention and potentiality, in which mobilities, imaginaries, and articulations constitute pivotal components, the MIA project comparatively analyses how these converge in the everyday lives of youth. Working with the same focus group through a shared methodological and analytical approach in three geographically and historically diverse African cities (Nouakchott, Cape Town, and Nairobi), we develop a new urgently needed general theoretical framework. We call this framework ‘peripheral synergy’. Drawing near to and comparing young Africans’ experiential histories on the urban periphery through fieldwork and collaboration, MIA fills a crucial knowledge-gap, inquiring into the following problem statement and related research questions:

Postdoc  summary/title:–Postdoctoral positions in Political Science at Aarhus University – Advertising Democracy

An acute challenge in today’s Western democracies is how to design strategies to improve citizens’ democratic commitments. Yet, most previous efforts to bolster citizens’ democratic values by providing them with elaborate facts, figures, and arguments have generally failed. The Advertising Democracy project (AdDem) argues that a successful intervention strategy should account for the fact that we live in an age when people face intensifying demands on their time and attention. Most do not want to spend precious time reading long, complex, democratic information from researchers and experts.

AdDem fills this gap and pioneers a new research agenda that redefines how we think about pro-democratic interventions in the 21st-century information environment. It examines whether democratic advertisements – ads that communicate the importance of democratic principles in an easily accessible manner – can improve citizens’ democratic commitment. The project will explore whether such democratic advertisements can strengthen citizens’ democratic values and, if so, determine the most effective design for these advertisements.

Postdoc  summary/title:–Postdoctoral Position in Interaction Design Research

Most social robot designs are dominated by cute aesthetics, featuring baby-like characteristics such as large eyes, small chins, and rounded facial features and limbs. Such cute robot designs have been proven to evoke both physical and emotional responses in humans. However, despite the widespread use of the design approach, cute toy-like designs have also been found to be perceived as condescending and a source of rejection due to their child-like associations, which might not match personal perceptions or desired home aesthetics.

The ACUTE project aims to explore minimally visible social cues as an alternative way to indicate robot sociality. The project will focus on artefact-inspired robots (AIR), as an alternative trajectory to the dominant robot appearance categories: anthropomorphic (human-like), zoomorphic (animal-like), and technical (machine-like). Seeking to explore how the motion profile and visual appearance of AIR influence the formation of social expectations and ascription of social capacities. Aiming for robot designs that convey some level of social cues and ability for social coordination, but in a way where the user attributes non-human social capacities (socio-morphing), rather than human social and emotional capacities (anthropomorphising).

Postdoc  summary/title:–Postdoc position in policy-led transformation of agriculture

The Department of Environmental Science at Aarhus University, Denmark, invites applications for a 2-year postdoctoral position in policy-led sustainable transformation of agriculture. The position is part of the research center Land-CRAFT, which is a Pioneer centre located at Aarhus University.

Food security, climate change and loss of biodiversity represent three of today’s major societal challenges. The Land-CRAFT centre was formed in June 2022 to undertake fundamental and applied research from field to landscape scales that will address these societal challenges, including the policies necessary to foster these changes.

There is a need to better understand pathways to a policy-led, sustainable transformation of agriculture. Such a transformation faces political constraints across the entire process from the initial policy debates and implementation through the agricultural industry’s business and political responses to subsequent rounds of policy reforms. These processes need to be studied both at Danish and European levels to better understand the constraints and to provide policy relevant knowledge on how to overcome them. There might be several approaches to address these problems, and for this position combinations of theoretical and empirical contributions would be appreciated.

(18) Postdoctoral Fellowship Position

Postdoc  summary/title:–Postdoctoral position in population genomics of the palaeolithic

The position is funded by a Villum Foundation Synergy grant COEVOLVE that aims to combine population genomics and material culture analysis on human paleolithic material to study gene-culture coevolution in the European Late Upper Palaeolithic (~20.000-11.000 years BP).

This data-driven project is led by two PIs – population geneticist Mikkel Schierup and archaeologist Felix Riede– and establishes interdisciplinary collaboration between archaeologists and bioinformaticians to create the first integrated workflow for reconstructing gene-culture coevolution using co-phylogenetic methods applied in parallel to material culture data and ancient DNA.

The population genetics task is first to curate the genetic data for all the samples with an archaeological context and then infer demography, population history, inbreeding history, and, more broadly, the genealogical history of each sample from this genetic data.

Postdoc  summary/title:–Postdoc in Biomarker Isotope Geochemistry

This position is part of a DFF-funded Sapere Aude project called BRAINSTORM: Biomarker Records of Africa Improved by Neural networks, Studies of Terrestrial Oscillations, and Revamped Methods. The aim of BRAINSTORM is to bridge the gap between orbital climate cycles and hominin evolutionary responses using novel leaf wax biomarker methods, machine learning, and evolutionary modeling. This postdoctoral position involves initial method development of low-concentration isotope analyses as well as the generation of high-resolution paleoclimate records. These new reconstructions will contribute to a context of hominin response to abrupt climate transitions in eastern Africa, and a new isotope method will have broader impact on the paleoclimate field.
