(05) Postdoctoral Fellowship Position

Postdoc  summary/title:–Postdoctoral Scientist in Tissue Engineering of Orthopaedic Implants

You will join a multi-PI consortium consisting of biomedical engineers and clinicians. We aim to use natural materials to bioengineer patient-specific osteochondral grafts that mimic the architecture, zonal organization and functional properties of native OC tissue as closely as possible. The osteochondral unit is comprised of transitions from hyaline articular cartilage, calcified cartilage zone, subchondral bone plate and subchondral cancellous bone.  Using 3D computer models based on native subchondral bone architecture, a high-resolution model of the subchondral microarchitecture will be printed from a bioceramic known for its outstanding toughness, strength and osseointegrative properties. Cellular layers of hyaline and calcified cartilage will be bonded to the bioceramic base and matured in a bioreactor until matching the native tissue.  The efficacy of these personalized grafts to regenerate OC lesions will be tested in an articular cartilage/subchondral bone defect model in sheep.  We hypothesize that these OC implants will be able to 1) restore the load-carrying capacity of the joint, 2) provide a mechanically stable support bed for the hyaline cartilage layer and 3) promote physiologic cartilage/bone crosstalk needed for long term joint homeostasis.

(06) Postdoctoral Fellowship Position

Postdoc  summary/title:–Postdoctoral Researcher in Tectono-Geomorphic Processes and Mountain Biodiversity

We are inviting applicants for a postdoctoral position, starting as soon as possible but ideally in April/May 2025, to work on the tectono-geomorphic rates and processes driving species origination in global mountains. The research will specifically focus on three regions characterized by high levels of endemism and geomorphic disequilibrium: the Northern Andes of Colombia, Mexico, and the Atlantic Forest in Brazil. New field sampling methodology applied to these areas will provide a unique opportunity to analyze how geological and climatic processes drive speciation and shape both regional and global biodiversity. The project will involve mapping and characterizing tectono-geological processes associated with mountain plant diversity (e.g. GPS or DEM-based analyses); expanding our scope by using process-based models (i.e. DAC) to establish broader response functions between landscape change and speciation; integrating plate movement data (through tools such as GPlates) to understand how tectonic and geomorphic deformation influence paleogeography and paleotopography; and incorporating these insights into a global, process-based model to predict diversity dynamics, including periods of rapid diversification, equilibria or diversity erosion. We are seeking a highly motivated candidate with a strong background geology/geomorphology, or a related discipline, a strong interest for evolutionary biology, and who is interested in bridging field data, computational modeling, and large-scale analyses. Experience with geospatial analysis, programming, or modeling (e.g., Julia) is highly desirable. If you are passionate about uncovering how Earth’s dynamic processes shape life, we encourage you to apply.

Postdoc  summary/title:–Postdoctoral Fellow in Nanotechnology for Gas Sensing in Medical Diagnostics

Urinary Tract Infections (UTIs) affect over 150 million individuals annually, ranging from mild symptoms to severe conditions such as pyelonephritis and urosepsis. Current diagnostic methods are time-consuming and require specialized knowledge and equipment, leading to delays and the overuse of broad-spectrum antibiotics that contribute to the growing AMR crisis. In 2023, the World Health Organization has initiated the AMR Diagnostic Initiative to promote the development of novel diagnostic tools for AMR with improved speed, usability and precision.

We aim at developing a novel diagnostic device for UTI that leverages the volatilomics of bacterial species. Your contribution will be the development of gas sensors to detect volatile biomarkers associated to uropathogens. Nanotechnology offers solutions to design sensing materials with large specific surface areas and tailored surface chemistry to distinctly interact with the targeted molecules. This PostDoc position is part of a larger consortium bringing together engineering, data science, microbiology and medical expertise from ETH Zürich, University Zürich and Balgrist Hospital.

Postdoc  summary/title:–Postdoctoral researcher position on Resilient Energy Infrastructures for the Swiss Energy Transition

RECIPE studies the risks, associated with the energy transition and climate change, that Switzerland can be exposed to in the coming 25-30 years. A set of hazards against which the Swiss energy infrastructure can be vulnerable will be identified by engaging a transdisciplinary team of experts. Hazard scenarios and vulnerability storylines will be articulated. The criticality of each energy infrastructure type will be estimated per hazard and per considered energy system evolution and climate change scenario. Criticality will be measured in terms of the impact on the Swiss economy, society, vital resources, and ecosystem. For the identified risks and vulnerabilities, appropriate resilience enhancement measures will be proposed by the consortium. Considered measures will include (i) adding new or maintaining existing energy infrastructure, (ii) new operational, asset management or monitoring processes allowing to properly and timely react to hazardous events, and (iii) non-technical measures, such as devising targeted policies or enhancing the resilience of the Swiss economy to energy disruptions. Finally, RECIPE will ensure that specific actionable recommendations to stakeholders will be produced based on all the project analyses and findings.

Postdoc  summary/title:–Postdoc in High Performance Computing (Development of Parallel Numerical Algorithms for Nano-Device Simulation)

QuaTrEx relies on the Non-equilibrium Green’s Function (NEGF) formalism and on scattering self-energies (SSE). Dedicated parallel numerical algorithms have been developed to solve the NEGF equations on multiple CPUs and GPUs, taking advantage of the specific block-tri-diagonal sparsity pattern of the Hamiltonian (H) and Overlap (S) matrices typically encountered in device simulations. The parallelization scheme of QuaTrEx has been optimized to minimize the communication time and volume of data exchanged. Finally, the SSE calculation has been accelerated by grouping small matrix-matrix multiplications together through batching. Significant speed-ups have been obtained by combining these different techniques, with still ample room for improvement.
