(01) Postdoctoral Fellowship Position

Postdoc  summary/title:–Postdoc Researcher, Understanding just sustainability transformations from disability perspectives

This position is part of an ERC Consolidator Grant awarded to Associate Professor Guido Caniglia (Principal Investigator) for the project: “Whose sustainability? Understanding and redefining just sustainability transformations from disability and queer perspectives” (WEIRD) (see further information below). By foregrounding and leveraging disability and queer perspectives around environmental sustainability, WEIRD aims to (a) critically appraise the way in which we usually think about sustainability transformations, (b) empirically understand how people with disability and from gender and sexual minorities are enacting and prefiguring alternative, just, and more environmentally sustainable futures, and (b) creatively redefine and generate new theories of justice in sustainability transformations (see: TOPIC and OBJECTIVES below for more details). The research design of the project is organized in two main tracks: the first looking at the intersection of environmental sustainability and disability and the second investigating the intersection of environmental sustainability and queer (see: APPROACH AND RESEARCH DESIGN below for more details).

(02) Postdoctoral Fellowship Position

Postdoc  summary/title:–3-year Post-Doctoral Researcher Position in Experimental and Molecular Food Web Ecology

Specifically, the project aims to:

  1. Quantify shifts in species dietary preferences under climate warming and resource availability scenarios.
  2. Analyze trophic rewiring in mesocosm food webs under heatwave scenarios.
  3. Assess the implications of these changes for coastal ecosystem functioning and stability.

This will be achieved through a combination of mesocosm experiments, DNA sequencing, and food web modeling. Combining these approaches will offer a mechanistic understanding of how coastal ecosystems respond to rapidly intensifying heatwaves, a critical insight for effectively managing and safeguarding our coastal marine environments.

(03) Postdoctoral Fellowship Position

Postdoc  summary/title:–Postdoctoral Researcher in Computational Genomics and Machine Learning through the NORPOD program

Human tumors are characterized by recurrent mutations in the well-defined cancer driver genes, but also non-mutational epigenetic reprogramming and phenotypic plasticity controlled by transcription factors (TF) are important contributors to tumorigenesis. Extensive consortium efforts have mapped the mutational and epigenetic landscapes of human cancers. However, the commonly used epigenomics methods such as ChIP-seq are correlative in nature and report a lot of spurious sites that might not be linked to gene expression, highlighting the need for novel innovative approaches to understand cancer genome and epigenome. Here, we will utilize cutting-edge long-read nanopore sequencing combined with deep machine learning approaches to model the epigenetic changes and mutational mechanisms in cancers originating from endodermal tissues. The goal is to reveal novel mechanistic details about the development of human cancer.

(04) Postdoctoral Fellowship Position

Postdoc  summary/title:–Postdoctoral Researcher in Functional Cancer Microbiome through the NORPOD program

The post-doctoral project aims to uncover genetic and adaptive mechanisms of the tumour associated microbiome in colon cancer (CRC) and its metastasis to distant organs. The goal is to identify microbial strain specific differences in CRC-associated strains using matched oral, fecal and tumour samples and their clinical impact. The aim is to validate these CRC-associated strains using state-of-the-art organoid cultures and novel in vivo mouse models to assess their influence on tumor growth and metabolic rewiring in driving CRC. Finally, we will move beyond correlations to identify functional microbial changes with comparative microbial genomics, indels and SNPs. Our groups have relevant expertise in the above technologies, for example Rafa lab’s expertise in in vivo cancer biology, mouse and organoid models and Dwibedi lab’s expertise in human microbiome genomics and microbial adaptive evolution.

(05) Postdoctoral Fellowship Position

Postdoc  summary/title:–Two Postdoctoral Researchers in Urban Anthropology of Africa

The Vital infrastructures and Urban Residential Politics project studies solutions that arise from the needs and aspirations of urban inhabitants in precarious circumstances.

How do these ‘vital infrastructures’ interact with other forces and materials that participate in city-making? What social, transactional, experiential, and political patterns do such practices generate and what effects do they have on the making of urban space and its everyday governance?

(06) Postdoctoral Fellowship Position

Postdoc  summary/title:–Postdoctoral researcher in new model organism project

The position is open in a project involving novel, highly regenerative mammalian model organism. The goals of the project are to test cancer susceptibility in the model organism and develop in vivo genome editing strategies for functional studies. The project is funded by the University of Helsinki. The successful applicant should have PhD degree and be well acquainted with cancer biology and/or genome engineering techniques. Most importantly, self-motivation and enthusiasm towards science, learning new things and technologies are the critical characters of successful applicants. Previous expe-rience in imaging, bioinformatics, and/or in vivo cancer techniques are acknowledged.

About The University of Helsinki, Finland – Official Website

The University of Helsinki  is a university located in Helsinki, Finland since 1829, but founded in the city of Turku (in Swedish Åbo) in 1640 as the Royal Academy of Åbo, at that time part of the Swedish Empire. It is the oldest and largest university in Finland with the widest range of disciplines available. In 2018, around 31,200 students were enrolled in the degree programs of the university spread across 11 faculties and 11 research institutes.

As of 1 August 2005, the university complies with the harmonized structure of the Europe-wide Bologna Process and offers bachelor, master, licenciate, and doctoral degrees. Admission to degree programmes is usually determined by entrance examinations, in the case of bachelor’s degrees, and by prior degree results, in the case of master and postgraduate degrees. Entrance is particularly selective (circa 15% of the yearly applicants are admitted). It has been ranked a top 100 university in the world according to the 2016 ARWU, QS and THE rankings.

The university is bilingual, with teaching by law provided both in Finnish and Swedish. Since Swedish, albeit an official language of Finland, is a minority language, Finnish is by far the dominating language at the university. Teaching in English is extensive throughout the university at master, licentiate, and doctoral levels, making it a de facto third language of instruction.
