PhD position summary/title:–PhD Candidate Microbial Host Preference in Plant Stress Resilience

), funded by the Dutch Research Council (NWO), is to harness the genomic potential of root-associated microorganisms as a new platform for improved stress resilience of future crops and sustainable food production. As part of these research efforts, we explore the importance of microbial host preference for stress alleviation on a set of different plant species. This adds crucial information to our understanding of how and in which environment these microorganisms will be most successful. It has thus strong implications on the development of biologicals as alternatives to chemical pesticides. For this project, we are looking for an enthusiastic PhD candidate who will perform controlled laboratory and greenhouse experiments followed by microbial metabarcoding, metatranscriptomics, root metabolomics, and plant phenotyping to determine the differential impact of microbial communities on the host’s ability to cope with biotic stress. You will work with the model plants Arabidopsis thaliana and Lotus japonicus, and the crop species tomato, cabbage, and pea, as well as with unique bacterial culture collections that you will use to design host-specific synthetic communities (SynComs).

(11) Fully Funded PhD Position

PhD position summary/title:–PhD Position “Social Media Representation of LGBQ (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Queer) Young People”

Are you passionate about exploring the role of social media in shaping the representation of LGBQ youth? Do you want to contribute to research that promotes a more inclusive media landscape and empowers LGBQ youth? If so, apply for this PhD project which delves into the impact of social media representations on LGBQ young people’s identity development and well-being.

This project’s main aim is to investigate the role of social media in providing authentic LGBQ youth identity representation. The media play an important role in shaping young peoples’ identity. However, research on representations in traditional entertainment media has shown that sexual identity minorities’ (lesbian, gay, bisexual, queer or LGBQ) representations are often absent; and if present, these representations are mostly negative or stereotypical. With social media, the media landscape is expected to change, i.e. offering more diverse content and catering to a greater variety of audiences. Consequently, it is argued that social media may be especially beneficial for LGBQ youth who do not see their identities authentically represented in traditional entertainment media. However, to date empirical evidence for this assumption is lacking. For this reason, the current project will address the question: How do LGBQ social media representations contribute to positive self-concept and sexual identity integration among sexual minority youth?

PhD position summary/title:–PhD in Computational Electrochemistry (ANION)

This PhD project focuses on understanding nanoscale electrochemistry, which is vital for next-generation devices in the electrification transition. It investigates how activity at one nanoelectrode site, or “hot spot,” affects nearby sites via local fluctuations, such as in electrochemical potential or concentration. Using advanced simulations like transition path sampling with molecular dynamics and neural network potentials, the study aims to uncover molecular mechanisms behind these fluctuations and their impact on reaction rates. By modeling interactions between two hot spots under confined conditions, it will explore how correlations arise in non-equilibrium systems. The work involves developing novel simulation methodologies and collaborating with experimental research at theAdvanced Nano-electrochemistry Institute of the Netherlands (ANION), contributing to sustainable electrochemical technologies to reduce carbon emissions.

About The University of Helsinki, Finland – Official Website

The University of Helsinki  is a university located in Helsinki, Finland since 1829, but founded in the city of Turku (in Swedish Åbo) in 1640 as the Royal Academy of Åbo, at that time part of the Swedish Empire. It is the oldest and largest university in Finland with the widest range of disciplines available. In 2018, around 31,200 students were enrolled in the degree programs of the university spread across 11 faculties and 11 research institutes.

As of 1 August 2005, the university complies with the harmonized structure of the Europe-wide Bologna Process and offers bachelor, master, licenciate, and doctoral degrees. Admission to degree programmes is usually determined by entrance examinations, in the case of bachelor’s degrees, and by prior degree results, in the case of master and postgraduate degrees. Entrance is particularly selective (circa 15% of the yearly applicants are admitted). It has been ranked a top 100 university in the world according to the 2016 ARWU, QS and THE rankings.

The university is bilingual, with teaching by law provided both in Finnish and Swedish. Since Swedish, albeit an official language of Finland, is a minority language, Finnish is by far the dominating language at the university. Teaching in English is extensive throughout the university at master, licentiate, and doctoral levels, making it a de facto third language of instruction.
