(04) Postdoctoral Fellowship Position

Postdoc  summary/title:– Postdoctoral Research Associate

Applications are invited for Postdoctoral Research Associate post in the laboratory of Prof. Julie Welburn, funded by BBSRC for 12 months, up to 24 months. The laboratory investigates fundamental mechanisms of the microtubule cytoskeleton in cell organization in different cell types, and in cell division and disease at the molecular and cellular level. In human cells, there are multiple a-tubulin isotypes and b-tubulin isotypes distributed in different cell types. Many pathogenic tubulin mutations are dominant negative and associated with tubulinopathies and cancer, yet the pathogenic mechanism is unclear.

The project will involve using cell biology and biochemical and structural approaches to 1) understand how the isotype-composition and properties of microtubule tracks control motor-cargo complexes and cellular architecture to modulate cell function and properties 2) discover the mechanism underlying pathogenic tubulin mutations.

We are now looking for an enthusiastic and talented researcher to join our team investigating the molecular diversity and function of tubulin isotypes and the mechanisms that underlie tubulin-isotype-specific diseases. You will play a major role in the design and conduct of the research project and be trained in the relevant techniques. You should have, or will shortly obtain, a PhD in a relevant subject area and will have experience in structural biology and biochemistry or/and advanced imaging and image analysis. Training can also be offered. An outstanding academic track record is essential and at least one first author publication in a prominent journal is expected.

Postdoc  summary/title:– Research Associate

The Blockchain Technology Laboratory (BTL) aims at studying blockchain technology. A blockchain protocol, initially showcased by the global digital currency Bitcoin, is typified by a publicly accessible and reliable ledger of transactions. Blockchain systems manage relations between stakeholders in the form of “smart contracts”. A number of applications are being explored by a growing number of start-ups and established companies, in health data processing, identity management, land ownership registries, and energy management just to name a few applications. Fully understanding this technology, in terms of its resilience to attacks, and scalability and performance, remains an important open research and development question that is at the core of BTL’s mission. It is a coordinated effort between academia and industry that aspires to provide advances, both foundational and applied, and ensure that the maximal potential of the technology can be realised in an expedient manner.

We are seeking highly motivated postdoc candidates to join the Swaffer lab and lead a major project addressing how cell size impacts gene expression & cellular signalling. While the significance of cell size for cellular physiology has been appreciated for many decades, we still have a surprisingly poor understanding of the mechanisms that couple the inner molecular workings of the cell to its size. Using yeast and/or mammalian cell lines as model systems, this project will take advantage of the quantitative and interdisciplinary expertise of the Swaffer lab to build on recent breakthrough discoveries regarding how transcription and cell size are coupled (Swaffer et al., Cell 2023).
