Postdoc  summary/title:– PostDoc position: Quantum experiments with levitated particles

Magnetic levitation of superconducting microparticles is a platform that greatly decouples the center-of-mass motion of a levitated mechanical resonator from its environment. This platform will enable ultra-sensitive force and acceleration sensors, as well as quantum experiments with macroscopic objects of 10^13 atomic mass units. The goal of the project is to generate quantum states in the center-of-mass motion of levitated microparticles. We will make this possible by merging magnetic levitation of superconducting microparticles with superconducting quantum circuits. Coupling these two platforms will allow us to reach quantum control over the motion of the levitated particles.

(09) Postdoctoral Fellowship Position

Postdoc  summary/title:– Postdoc positions in giant atoms for quantum simulation or quantum communication

In quantum optics, it is common to assume that atoms can be approximated as point-like compared to the wavelength of the light they interact with. It is only in the past few years that experiments (at Chalmers, MIT, and other places), with artificial atoms built from superconducting circuits, have shown that this assumption can be violated. These artificial atoms can couple to an electromagnetic field at several points, which can be wavelengths apart. The study of giant atoms and the interference effects that arise from their coupling points is still in its infancy, but it is attracting increasing attention. In this project, we aim to go from fundamental research towards useful applications of giant atoms in emerging quantum technology.

The project is carried out in the stimulating research environment of the Wallenberg Centre for Quantum Technology (WACQT), a 12-year, billion-SEK initiative started in 2018 with the purpose of advancing Swedish academia and industry to the forefront of quantum technology, and to build a Swedish quantum computer.

The WACQT team at Chalmers currently has about 80 members (faculty, permanent research staff, postdoctoral researchers, PhD students, and undergraduate students) and is expanding. WACQT is committed to promoting career development, diversity, and gender equality through networking and supporting activities.

(11) Postdoctoral Fellowship Position

Postdoc  summary/title:– Postdoctoral position in scientific writing education

The push for open science means that scientific knowledge is increasingly disseminated both inside and outside academia: future scientists need the right tools to communicate with a broad and diverse audience. This requires advanced writing expertise and rhetorical flexibility, well beyond writing for academic purposes. Unfortunately, writing education at the graduate and post-graduate level seldom addresses this need: writing research has not investigated how to promote transfer of writing skills and the development of rhetorical flexibility in the training of future researchers.

For this postdoctoral position, we seek applicants who are interested in addressing this gap. We invite project proposals which use or develop established theories in writing research and educational sciences, and adopt an empirical focus with a rich methodological approach in the investigation of pedagogical practices and task development in writing.
Possible interesting areas of research include but are not limited to (1) research on genre pedagogy in academic settings with a focus on learning dynamics and/or teacher perspectives (2) research on writing transfer (3) research on pedagogical writing-task development, including multimodality, use of LLM/AI, and/or multilingual approaches, 4) research on science communication pedagogy. To address the proposed research questions, we welcome qualitative, quantitative, and mixed-method approaches, as long as the proposed approach is well described and justified, and demonstrates a focus on data richness.

An ongoing international collaboration and a pilot project on multi-genre pedagogy will provide the interested applicants with a strong and reliable support basis, but applicants will be able to develop their postdoctoral work according to their interests and skills, and are therefore encouraged to present creative projects.

(12) Postdoctoral Fellowship Position

Postdoc  summary/title:– Post-Doc in Biotechnology/Molecular Cell Biology

The research group of Mikael Molin has in later years pioneered the molecular understanding of oxidants in protein homeostasis (a k a proteostasis). Because low levels of oxidants are produced endogenously and because they target protein synthesis, folding and degradation they have a profound impact on physiology and disease. Because of their role in feed-back regulating protein synthesis as a function of metabolism oxidants have also turned out to limit the productivity of cell factories. However, modern methods to measure ROS and expertise in redox signaling enables rational metabolic engineering to increase the productivity of yeast cell factories (Gast V, Appl Environ Microbiol, 2021; -, Bio-protocol, 2022).

Moreover, yeast cell factories transforming sustainable starting materials, such as lignocellulose, to fine chemicals sustain significant oxidative and acid stress that limit productivity. Interestingly, recent studies in the collaborating Nygård lab (Division of Industrial Biotechnology, Chalmers) has pinpointed a key role for genes involved in the dissociation of one of the major protein degradation complexes in cells, the ubiquitin-dependent proteasome, in acid resistance (Mukherjee V, mSystems, 2021), implicating further oxidative proteostasis networks in cell factory performance.

In this project you will take engineering further by incorporating modern oxidant/proteostasis probes, CRISPRi and high-throughout screening with the aim to develop resistant yeast cell factory strains able to produce higher titers of aromatic chemicals from sustainable starting material.

(13) Postdoctoral Fellowship Position

Postdoc  summary/title:– Postdoc position in single molecule analysis with nanopores

Our group works with chemically modified nanostructures for various applications. We are interested in developing a new kind of platform for trapping single or very few biological molecules. This will open up new possibilities for analyzing biomolecules and their function, which may ultimately lead to a better understanding of life on the molecular level.

More specifically, we want to study the behavior of proteins. For instance, we believe that the methods we are developing can be used to gain new insights on oligomer formation among certain proteins that are associated with diseases such as neurodegenerative conditions (amyloid formation). By investigating how a very small number of molecules, confined in space to the nanoscale, interact with each other we may be able to understand better how and why toxic oligomers form.

We are also interested in using our technologies to study enzymes, which are nature’s catalytic machines. Enzymes are very important for various applications in bioprocessing technology. A better understanding of how they operate, obtained by studying them one by one, can improve various areas of biotechnology and sensor devices.

Finally, the synthetic systems we are developing can be used to mimic biological processes, such as transport of proteins through the membrane surrounding the cell nucleus. By artificially reproducing such processes we can learn more about how the biological machinery works on the molecular level and construct biologically inspired devices in a “bottom up” manner.

As a postdoc, you would contribute to our work on the above topics, although your exact project is subject to discussion and new research directions may emerge. Our broad research field requires knowledge about advanced nanofabrication techniques, fluorescence microscopy and organic chemistry synthesis, among other things. (You are not expected to know everything when you start, but some topic relevance in your background is meriting.) You will work closely together with other PhD students and postdocs in the same research group.

To qualify as a postdoc, you must have a doctoral degree. Good recommendations from your previous supervisor are meriting. Similarly, good publications are meriting but not a formal requirement. The most important qualification is a true interest in science and a strong motivation to do research. Your thesis should ideally be from the fields of physics, chemistry or materials science. However, a PhD in other topics such as life science could also be a suitable background.

(24) Postdoctoral Fellowship Position

Postdoc  summary/title:– Postdoc in Theoretical Chemistry and Chemical Bonding

This project seeks to advance computational studies of optical effects in modified base pairs and photoswitches when integrated into RNA/DNA environments. A key challenge is that electronic structure analysis typically relies on Kohn-Sham Density Functional Theory (KS-DFT), which, while widely used for its balance between accuracy and computational cost, has significant limitations. Foremost among these limitations is the tenuous connection between the energies of KS-DFT eigenstates (the orbitals) and physical reality as revealed, for example, in optical excitations.

Crucial leadups to this project is development of a formally exact and orbital-free DFT expression for the average energy of electrons, and beyond state-of-the-art DFT methodology exceptionally well suited to describe base-pair interactions. As a postdoctoral researcher in the Chalmers Molecular Spectral Design Initiative, you will help integrate these advances to develop a novel approach to chemical bonding analysis. This new method focuses on accurate calculations of the electron energy density and its connections to the total energy, molecular orbital theory, and key chemical concepts like electronegativity.

The research will primarily utilize periodic (plane-wave-based) DFT. However, analysis and design efforts will also incorporate extensive experimental spectroscopic data and insights from RNA/DNA nucleobase analogs and DNA-bound molecular photoswitches.
