Postdoc  summary/title:–Postdoctoral Early Career Researcher Positions, Centre of Excellence for The World in the Viking Age (WIVA)

For centuries, the so-called Viking Age (c.750-1050 CE) has been subject to political misappropriation and projected, monochrome stereotype – making it all the more urgent to emphasise that the people of the time were individuals as varied and complicated, in every way, as ourselves. This spotlight on diversity, in all senses of the term, lies at the heart of the WIVA Centre: our objective is to recover a Viking Age that does not care what we think of it, a pluralistic past as it was (hard though that can be to access), not as anyone might wish it to have been. The notion of a Norse diaspora has now become commonplace in studies of the period, but also requires deconstruction. Our focus is the world in the Viking Age, an arena of mutual interactions, contacts and cultural feedback, subtly different from the more familiar ‘Viking world’. Moving past the Eurocentric notions of a ‘western’ and ‘eastern’ Viking Age, it is possible to perceive the finer grain of Scandinavian cultural encounters. We aim to explore the full span of the extended, Afro-Eurasian world of the Norse, looking primarily south and east along the so-called Silk Roads, tracing their activities in networks of early globalisation that connected the Baltic to the Mediterranean, the Indian Ocean, Asia, and the eastern seas – places where the Scandinavians were as often in a minority, but also at a disadvantage.

We are now seeking to appoint two postdoctoral Early Career Researchers to full-time positions, fixed-term for two years. Duties include up to 20% teaching and supervision, alongside 80% dedicated to personal research on themes related to the Centre.

In parallel with these postdoc positions, we are also seeking a number of International Visiting Researchers (advertised separately), and more posts of both kinds will be added over time. A new interdisciplinary, two-year MA degree programme will also be launched, again addressing the same theme of the world in the Viking Age. All these activities will be supplemented by seminars, workshops, informal contact events, and public outreach. Finally, WIVA is an invitation, not a fixed entity. The Centre is not a research project, but rather a home and a hub for them, as well as a base for teaching. We will populate WIVA with projects, programmes, and people, and we hope that others will wish to join us on this exciting journey.

Postdoc  summary/title:– Postdoctoral researcher in drone-based greenhouse gas measurements over inland waters

Most rivers are heavily influenced by humans. In many places, rivers are therefore being restored to promote water quality and biological diversity. Construction of wetlands and dam removal are two common measures, and both lead to an increased abundance of macrophytes, i.e. plants in or near water. Macrophytes can emit significant amounts of greenhouse gases, but at the same time also bind carbon and thus constitute a carbon sink. The CLIMIPHY project aims to create new knowledge about the climate footprint of macrophytes that gives river restoration professionals the opportunity to restore watercourses in a way that favors biodiversity and water quality, with as little climate footprint as possible. See also https://www.uu.se/en/department/ecology-and-genetics/research/limnology/biogeochemistry/climiphy

The postdoctoral researcher will work in an exciting sub-project that uses new drone technology to perform field measurements the emission of greenhouse gases from river restoration areas. The work takes place in close collaboration with other project team members, and under joint supervision together with meteorologists at the Department of Earth Sciences: https://www.uu.se/en/department/earth-sciences/research/air-water-and-landscape-science/meteorology

Postdoc  summary/title:– Postdoctoral position in Materials Physics

We are looking for a postdoctoral fellow to be stationed at the SuperADAM instrument at ILL, Grenoble. SuperADAM is the only fully Swedish owned and operated neutron instrument. It is a high-resolution polarized neutron reflectometer suited for magnetic, hard condensed matter and soft matter, as well as life science investigations. The duties of the successful candidate include the support of users on the instrument, to conduct his/her own research, as well as to work with the continued development and upgrade of the instrument. Besides functioning as a beam line scientist, the postdoctoral fellow is expected to develop his/her research, within the areas soft matter, magnetism or similar, which will be performed both at ILL and the three partner universities (Uppsala, Lund and Linköping). The research direction is mostly determined by the expertise and interests of the candidates, but experience of neutron scattering of interest for Swedish users of SuperADAM is presupposed. This research should ideally build on and expand existing collaborations between the ILL and the three partner Universities, and thereby exploit capabilities in Grenoble, (e.g. the partnership for soft condensed matter ( http://www.epn-campus.eu/users/partnership-for-soft-condensed-matter-pscm/) and/or in Sweden, (e.g. thin film deposition and x-ray reflectivity characterization). An interest in the use of magnetic reference layers, as well as off-specular scattering, are examples of possible strength areas that utilize the capacity of the instrument.

Postdoc  summary/title:– Postdoctoral position in Materials Physics

We are looking for a postdoctoral fellow with a strong background in software development, or software developer with a strong interest in science. You will join a new project, within which applied statistics and information theory is used to quantify the information content of neutron reflectivity datasets. Using this, we are able to optimize the design of experiments and to make previously impossible experiments possible, as well as to run existing experiments faster and better.

In a facility where a typical experiment lasts few days, costs tens of thousands of pounds/Euros and takes 6+ months to apply for, any improvements to the experiment are of large value. The effort will be based on an existing code-base we have developed to design optimal thin film structures for a given purpose. These structures will be fabricated by other members of the collaboration and measured using a variety of methods including neutron reflectivity experiments. Participation and collaboration with all other parts of the project is strongly encouraged and if the candidate chooses, they can participate in the large-scale facility experiments.

The code-base is released as an open-source project, with an emphasis on sustainable software engineering (https://github.com/jfkcooper/HOGBEN) and has two journal articles published.  Significant development of the capabilities of the code-base is required. These will include improvements to the experimental design code, as well as improving the data analysis, applying Bayesian methods for extracting parameter uncertainties and model selection. The developments will allow the entire collaboration to move forward, suggesting optimal materials systems to be investigated and designing experiments for the other nodes of the project.

The position is based in Sweden but involves shorter as well as extended stays in the UK and France, working at ISIS and ILL. Visits to ESS are also assumed. There will be the opportunity for overseas travel to meet international collaborators, and to present the work at workshops/conferences.
