We are looking for an outstanding research fellow to join our interdisciplinary team that is investigating how proteins aggregate into amyloid fibrils, and how fibrils with different structure perturb cellular function. This Wellcome Trust-funded role is to use cryoEM, supported with other biochemical and biophysical analyses, to understand the structure of amyloid fibrils formed in vitro and purified from patient samples and to determine the activity of different fibril types in causing cellular dysfunction. The project will focus on IAPP involved in type-2-diabetes, a-synuclein and Parkinson’s disease and Ab and Alzheimer’s. Our goal is to describe the structural pathway of amyloid formation of these proteins and to determine the role of disease-relevant mutations, post-translational modifications and ligand binding on amyloid structure and their consequences in disease. 

Only 1 in 5,000 drugs reach the market, mainly due to solubility issues that reduces their bioavailability and makes them less efficacious. One of the main routes the pharmaceutical industry uses to mitigate this issue is co-crystallisation, to get the right solid form that can be formulated easily. However, co-crystal design is currently a trial-and-error process that would benefit from data-driven approaches to narrow down possible co-formers. To enhance the predictive capabilities of models, it is vital to have knowledge of both the solution-state and the solid-state, drawn from both experimental and computational approaches. 

In this project, you will develop high-throughput methodologies to improve our understanding of the interplay between the solution-state dynamics and the solid-state in the co-crystallisation of small-molecule organics. This will involve: preparing meticulous datasets of solubility information for known drug co-crystals; studying the solution-state dynamics with synchrotron total X-ray scattering studies; and density functional theory based formation energies. You will also have the opportunity to train on cutting-edge physics-informed machine learning methods, in collaboration with the STFC Scientific Machine Learning (SciML) group.

We seek to appoint a Research Fellow in Chemical Biology and Drug Discovery to work on exciting new targets in ubiquitin signaling biology, with a particular emphasis on deubiquitylating enzymes (DUBs). The fellow will work closely with teams led by Prof. Adam Nelson and Prof. Elton Zeqiraj at the Astbury Centre, University of Leeds, Leeds, UK. The position is available for two years. 

The project will focus on the chemical biology of small-molecule inhibitors of enzyme complexes involved in ubiquitin cell signalling regulation. A major aspect of the post is applying workflows (developed in the Nelson group) that integrate plate-based chemistry, mass spectrometry and automated data analysis, to discover new chemical tools. You will also develop assays to uncover inhibitor mode of action and target engagement in vitro and in cells. The position will suit someone interested in small molecule ligand discovery and drug design, protein structure and cell signalling biology.

The Leeds Index of Platform Labour Protest (Leeds Index) is a database which uses news reporting to track and analyse instances of protest by platform workers globally. As a postdoctoral researcher you will join the Leeds Index team to help us extend the dataset, and increase the depth of our analysis. Specifically, over the course of this project we plan to develop an understanding of which organisational, institutional and economic factors enable platform worker protest to make organisational and bargaining gains. This will require an ability to engage with our quantitative dataset as well as the ability to undertake independent qualitative research.

You will be based in the Methodological Research, Education and Innovation (M-REI) Division at the Clinical Trials Research Unit within Leeds Institute of Clinical Trials Research (LICTR). The Unit is one of the largest in the UK and conducts national and international randomised and early phase clinical trials in a variety of clinical fields. Our main aim is to develop and support novel and efficient trials to change clinical practice for the better. Our past results and current research have already helped to do this. Our results inform the academic development of this specialised field of clinical research on a national and international level. Particularly, we specialise in the development, optimisation and evaluation of complex interventions, complex phase III trials and efficient phase I/II trials, as well as adaptive designs, seamless phase II/III designs and biomarker driven designs.

We are seeking a highly motivated and well-organised candidate with a PhD (or be close to completion) in virology, cell biology, neurology, or a closely allied discipline. You should have excellent organisational skills, including data collection, database management and data analysis. The project will involve learning and applying cutting-edge brain organoid techniques including virological assessments in organoid cultures, therefore experience in culturing iPSCs and their genetic manipulation is essential. You should also have previous experience of working in a high containment biosafety category 3 (BSL3) facility. Some experience in studying the role of proteins in cellular cytotoxicity and apoptosis would be desirable as the project will involve the use of both approaches.

Other researchers within the project will then connect these climate data to around 45 million birth records from Africa, Europe and Latin America to create new indicators for long-term global monitoring systems.

In particular, you will enhance first-person navigation and action in challenging environments of low or no visibility through sensing via ultrasound and/or infrasound and digital information processing via augmented reality (AR). An EPSRC-funded project “Informing Future Numerical Standards by Determining Features of Non-Standard Mathematical Hardware” is a 3-year project that aims to develop tools to improve our understanding of several numerical features of floating-point hardware present in datacentre GPUs and domain-specific machine learning accelerators. The main goal is to improve the existent almost entirely manual methods by focusing on three core aspects: automating, removing the need for specialized in-depth knowledge of mathematics of floating-point arithmetic, and informing the public about the features of the current hardware.

Travel behaviour models have traditionally relied on survey data. However, in recent years, advances in data science and ubiquitous computing have made it possible to use novel data sources for augmenting travel behaviour models. These include passively generated big data sources (e.g. mobile phone, GPS traces, public transport smart card records) as well as behavioural data collected using virtual reality (VR) experiments where it is possible to collect physiological sensor data like skin conductance, heart rate and Electroencephalography (EEG) signals using non-intrusive techniques.  

The NEXUS project, funded by the Future Leader Fellowship Programme of the UKRI, looks at developing next-generation mathematical models of travel behaviour that can better predict the decisions made by travellers in the fast-evolving mobility landscape by augmenting traditional choice modelling techniques with insights from machine learning. We are looking for a committed, highly motivated and innovative individual with a choice modelling background and experience with working with large data sets to work on this exciting long-term research project.

The University of Leeds invites applications for a Research Fellow position in theoretical and computational astrophysics, funded by a Research Project Grant from the Leverhulme Trust to work with Dr Chris Nixon. This project is a collaboration with Jim Pringle (University of Cambridge) and Tim Naylor (University of Exeter). You will conduct original research into the dynamics of accretion discs, working both independently and in collaboration with project team members. This project seeks to advance our understanding of accretion dynamics through complementary observational and theoretical modelling of accretion discs. 

The research project, Inclusive Art for Wicked Problems, is funded by UKRI via a Future Leader Fellowship and will be delivered in collaboration with inclusive arts organisation Pyramid. It will use an arts-based systemic action research methodology to mobilise the expertise and creativity of learning disabled and neurodiverse artists across societal challenges, like care, support, and education. This includes a methodological work package to generate new ways of working that bridges inclusive arts practice and systemic action research, an international collaboration between the UK team and a researcher and art museum professionals in Brazil, and a locally embedded systemic action research project led by Pyramid artists across the Leeds City Region tackling the urgencies and issues with affect them.
