(03) Postdoctoral Fellowship Position

Postdoc  summary/title:–Postdoctor in fluid mechanical modelling of ice-ocean-interaction

Ice sheets melt in contact with warm ocean water, which contributes to rising sea levels. The input of cold and fresh glacier water into the ocean also modifies ocean currents. The nonlinear feedback mechanisms in ice-ocean interaction are important to understand for reliable predictions of responses to climate change, but are also difficult to model.

We announce a postdoctoral position within FLOW, a project funded by Swedish e-Science Research Centre (SeRC) where we aim to improve understanding and prediction of glacier movement, melting and ice-ocean-interaction, by using and developing modern high-performance computing methods for modeling of ice melting and movement in contact with the ocean. Depending on the background and interests of the candidate, we can for example focus on: i) ice as a non-Newtonian elasto-visco-plastic fluid and its gliding properties, or ii) the fluid mechanical and thermodynamical phenomena around the contact line between ice, bedrock and ocean.

(10) Postdoctoral Fellowship Position

Postdoc  summary/title:–Postdoc in theory development and complex sociotechnical systems

We are looking for a person who wants to contribute to our theory development and conceptualization of the area of complex socio-technical systems. Complex systems are often described as consisting of different parts or levels. Theories for complex systems, such as hierarchy theory, the attention-based view of organizations, social network analysis, and theories around innovation ecosystems, often focus on these descriptions, and define, for example, which parts are important or how different levels depend on each other. A common challenge for these theories is that they are often good at defining how the whole leads to interaction or can affect the parts in a system but are significantly worse at defining how the parts can affect the whole. The position will therefore contribute to developing the research direction by specifically analyzing and describing theory for how parts and levels of complex systems are connected, with the long-term goal of contributing concepts that can be used for modeling and simulation of complex systems. The position will participate in the development of future research projects and networks, also by applying research results in collaboration and network building with researchers at KTH and beyond for the development of the research direction.

(13) Postdoctoral Fellowship Position

Postdoc  summary/title:–Postdoc in Nanoparticle/Polymer Composites for Photovoltaics

A new modern direction in photovoltaics is building-integration, where functional components become an intrinsic part of the construction materials. Typically, a “Building Integrated Photovoltaics” system (BIPV) consists of integrated PV modules into the building envelope, such as the roof or the facade. This concept can be also extended to windows. Although the inherent window transparency should be maintained, even a partial conversion of the sunlight to electrical energy can generate sizeable power quantities where large surface areas are involved.

In this project luminescent solar concentrators (“Quantum Dot Glass”) based on nanocomposite films, laminated on glass, will be investigated for this purpose. Silicon quantum dots, metal nanocrlusters, transition metal-doped nanoparticles, silicon nanospheres, etc. will be considered as fluorophores and off-stoichiometry thiol-enes as a primary host polymer. The work will consist of nanoparticle synthesis, their surface functionalization, preparation of a polymer/nanoparticle hybrid material, device assembly and its characterization. Nano-characterization and optical measurement facilities in our Albano Laboratory will be extensively used to study synthesized materials and devices. The work is a part of a European project with academia and industry on smart windows, and a close following on deadlines for milestones and deliverables is important.

About KTH Royal Institute of Technology, Stockholm, Sweden – Official Website

KTH Royal Institute of Technology, abbreviated KTH, is a public research university in Stockholm, Sweden. KTH conducts research and education within engineering and technology, and is Sweden’s largest technical university. Currently, KTH consists of five schools with four campuses in and around Stockholm.

KTH was established in 1827 as Teknologiska Institutet (Institute of Technology), and had its roots in Mekaniska skolan (School of Mechanics) that was established in 1798 in Stockholm. But the origin of KTH dates back to the predecessor to Mekaniska skolan, the Laboratorium Mechanicum, which was established in 1697 by Swedish scientist and innovator Christopher Polhem. Laboratorium Mechanicum combined education technology, a laboratory and an exhibition space for innovations. In 1877 KTH received its current name, Kungliga Tekniska högskolan (KTH Royal Institute of Technology). The King of Sweden Carl XVI Gustaf is the High Protector of KTH.
