PhD position summary/title:–Ph.D. candidate for designing, modelling & optimising charging systems for E-vehicles based on GaN devices
We are seeking individuals with outstanding academic credentials and a high level of motivation to engage in doctoral-level research on the development of efficient charging systems for future electric vehicles with a battery system voltage exceeding 1 kV. The project will investigate stationary high-power charging stations and solutions for multi-input capable onboard “combo”-chargers. The high-power charging station should be designed to facilitate direct current (DC) fast charging with voltages exceeding 1 kV and charging currents exceeding 500 A. The target is to charge the vehicle from 20% to at least 80% state of charge in less than 10 minutes. The “combo”-charger should be designed as a flexible onboard charger with maximal 22 kW, which can handle different input voltage levels and which can operate with DC and AC input voltages. There, the system efficiency should be very high despite the different input voltages and the target is to achieve a high-power density and a low weight.
The research project will commence with a comprehensive review and evaluation of existing charging concepts, with a particular focus on efficient and compact solutions. Based on this review, it is necessary to develop own solutions and identify the optimal overall concept, taking into account given performance criteria. For the identified optimal concepts, models for the converter, including modulation, as well as for the passive components and the thermal management, should be developed. With these models, the design and the operational parameters of the charging solutions are optimised for efficiency, power density, and cost. The basis for the converter systems are novel GaN devices, which enable an efficient operation at high switching frequencies. In a final step, you should validate the optimised design of the onboard charger by a prototype system.

PhD position summary/title:–Ph.D. candidate for modelling & optimising highly efficient drive systems for E-vehicles based on GaN devices
We are seeking individuals with outstanding academic credentials and a high level of motivation to engage in doctoral research on the development of highly efficient future drive systems for electric vehicles with a battery system voltage exceeding 1 kV. In order to achieve high efficiency across a wide operating range, it is necessary to evaluate, model and optimise different four-level inverter topologies and suitable modulation schemes for drive systems. It is crucial to consider a wide operating range, given that the inverter is directly connected to the medium-voltage battery, which has a wide voltage range depending on the state of charge. Additionally, the drive system is often operated at a relatively low power/torque level compared to nominal power/torque. Therefore, partial load operation must also be taken into account during the design phase.
The efficiency increase should be achieved by using optimised 4-level inverter topologies, which also allow to reduce the losses in the electrical machine due to lower ripple currents. In addition, the switching frequency and modulation are optimised for the respective operating points. One disadvantage of 4L inverters is the higher number of switches, which results in higher costs and requires more space. Therefore, the trade-off between lower inverter/motor losses due to the 4L topology and a higher system costs/complexity should be evaluated in the project.
The optimal design should be identified based on comprehensive models and an optimisation procedure considering typical operation profiles of electric vehicles. In the optimisation different 4L topologies, modulation schemes, a wide switching frequency range, and different motor types as well as basic control strategies should be considered, for identifying the best topology and the optimal operating parameters for the different operating points. Furthermore, switching loss models for new wide band gap enhancement mode GaN HEMT devices should be investigated, which allow to determine the switching losses for the different operating points (voltage, current & temperature). Additionally, models for losses in the electric machine, with a particular focus on HF ripple, should be developed. Finally, the optimised design should be validated with a prototype system.

PhD position summary/title:–Doctoral Student: Sensing and Controlling the Large-Scale Anaerobic Digestion of Human Excreta to Minimize Health Risks and Carbon Emissions
Biogas systems are in demand for their ability to produce biogas, a sustainable cooking fuel. However, the effluent from these digesters contains harmful pathogens and requires further treatment before it is safe for agricultural use.
This research will utilise at least 3, full scale (40 m3) anaerobic (biogas) digesters in Kenya and/or Malawi where the feedstock is excreta from school toilet blocks. By employing the same technology at multiple locations, the researcher will be able to test and compare multiple technical interventions at full scale. The goals are to 1) identify the sensors and control mechanisms to optimise biogas production, considering variable feedstock (quality and quantity); and 2) design, test and optimise low-cost technologies capable of destroying all pathogens in the resulting effluent. Pilot studies on solar- and biogas-fuelled technologies are underway, but must be verified at scale.
Direct motivation for this project is article 6 of the Paris Agreement which encourages international cooperation and allows high-income, high-polluting countries to meet their carbon reduction commitments affordably by funding carbon reducing activities in lower-income countries and claiming the carbon reductions for themselves. Specifically, Switzerland, under its CO₂ Act aims to offset about 40 million tonnes of CO₂ by 2030 – 10% of its national emissions – with over half of these offsets occurring abroad. One upcoming collaboration, helping to achieve this goal, is with Malawi and involves distributing 10,000 household biogas digesters to dairy farmers.
This role involves technology development and optimization, extensive sensor piloting (for methane, effluent, and Volatile Fatty Acids), large-scale data management, complex stakeholder interactions, and long-term research stays in sub-Saharan Africa. Developed technologies are expected to have a direct impact on solutions adopted by Switzerland and throughout the world (i.e., India, sub-Saharan Africa).

PhD position summary/title:–PhD candidate for developing and building new concepts for ultra-fast, medium voltage solid-state pulse modulators
We are seeking individuals with outstanding academic credentials and a high level of motivation to engage in doctoral-level research on the development of novel concepts for ultrafast pulse modulators capable of generating pulses with an amplitude of up to 15kV/300A, a pulse width in the range of 1-2ns and a rise/fall time of less than 500ps. Such fast ns-pulse generators are required, for example, in kicker systems, which are a key element of future synchrotron light sources (e.g. SLS 2.0 @ PSI) needed for basic research in biomedicine, engineering and natural sciences. The extremely fast rise and fall times of the pulses are crucial for the efficient operation of the kicker system without distorting the electron beam. The very fast voltage pulses cannot be generated with “conventional” switching devices as for example GaN HEMTs or SiC MOSFETs, since these are too slow. Therefore, the project will investigate concepts that exploit the fast reverse recovery behaviour of special diodes and use these diodes as “opening switches” in combination with GaN HEMTs and/or SiC MOSFETs. Such diodes will be developed by the Advanced Power Semiconductor Laboratory (APS) at the ETH within the framework of the planned project.
The research project will start with the investigation and development of basic pulse generator topologies using the extremely fast diodes as opening switches. Since all the parasitic elements of the circuit and the diode package strongly influence the achievable switching speed, the converter layout and the packaging will be optimised in a second step of the project. This includes investigating the series connection of several diodes and/or sub-circuits to achieve the required pulse voltage levels. The packaging of the developed diodes will be investigated in cooperation with APS. Finally, the design of the pulse generator will be optimised, and a prototype system will be built to validate the research results. The project will be carried out in close collaboration with various research facilities that require such fast ns pulse generators for the design of future accelerator systems.
