PhD position summary/title:– PhD student position in Quantum experiments with levitated particles
Magnetic levitation of superconducting microparticles is a platform that greatly decouples the center-of-mass motion of a levitated mechanical resonator from its environment. This platform will enable ultra-sensitive force and acceleration sensors, as well as quantum experiments with macroscopic objects of 10^13 atomic mass units. The goal of the project is to generate quantum states in the center-of-mass motion of levitated microparticles. We will make this possible by merging magnetic levitation of superconducting microparticles with superconducting quantum circuits. Coupling these two platforms will allow us to reach quantum control over the motion of the levitated particles. Within the project, you will simulate and fabricate your devices and use these for your experiments. You will receive training in all required techniques such that you will get a smooth start for performing your project in our collaborative working environment.
The research project is experimental in nature, supervised by Assoc. Prof. Dr. Witlef Wieczorek and funded by an ERC Consolidator Grant. PhD position summary/title:– PhD student position on Biotechnology solutions for fungal infections
In the past decade, fungal diseases have caused an estimated million deaths annually, and over one billion people suffer from severe fungal infections. Currently, there are few antifungal drugs approved for use in humans. The last antifungals approved for human use were characterized in 2002. On another hand, the timely detection of fungal infections remains challenging, and there is a need for the development of faster diagnostic assay methods.
The project will implement cutting-edge integrated fungal biotechnology to produce and characterize fungal-based molecules with potential immunomodulatory effects in cells of the human innate immune system, e.g., macrophages. The findings will provide an initial indication of their potential health-promoting benefits expecting to correlate the molecular structure of the oligomers based on a glycomic approach (enzymatic fingerprint coupled to mass spectrometry) to their immune response in human cells. The project includes a complete characterization of the fungal molecules obtained from the pathogen’s cell wall to ensure that these can be used in future studies to improve diagnosis and prevent fungal infections in humans.

PhD position summary/title:– PhD student positions in Biochemistry and Microbiology
Tree bark is a renewable resource that is produced in huge amounts every year, but it is poorly used today. It contains regular wood polymers, such as cellulose and lignin, but also a large fraction of so-called extractive compounds that make it unsuitable for regular pulping processes. The extractives also have interesting roles as major defensive molecules protecting the tree from external threats, but still there is very little information on how bark and its extractives are broken down in nature.
In this project, which is part of a larger project funded by the Novo Nordisk Foundation, we will broadly investigate microbial bark degradation and aim to develop knowledge as well as new biotechnological methods to better valorize it. We will target both Nordic tree bark types and more tropical species.
The project will involve microbiology, various (meta-)omics analyses, molecular biology to clone and heterologously express genes of interest in either bacteria or yeast, protein production and purification, and detailed biochemical characterization of identified enzymes, including determination of substrate specificities and kinetics. Additionally, various chemical analyses will be important to understand what happens to the material or individual molecules during microbial or enzymatic treatments.
We expect to recruit 2 PhD students and 1 postdoc to the larger project.
A collaborative mindset will be instrumental and expected from all team members, though each person will be able to pursue or drive more individual projects.

PhD position summary/title:– PhD student position in microwave hyperthermia cancer treatment
In this project you will work in a team on developing a multi-channel hyperthermia system for focused heat delivery into deep seated tumors. Hyperthermia, i.e heating of tumour tissue in the range of 40–44°C, is applied in combination with radiotherapy and/or chemotherapy to improve clinical outcome. In recent years, the ability of hyperthermia to dramatically enhance tumour control rates and even increase patient survival rates for most common cancer types has been demonstrated. At Chalmers, in close collaborations with medical expertise at the Sahlgrenska Academy at Gothenburg University, we are developing microwave hyperthermia systems to improve the treatment outcome for patients with advanced cancer in head and neck (H&N) and for children with brain tumours. Deep penetration in the body is achieved by using constructive wave interference from a large number of antennas organized in multiple rings around the patient. The heat effect is developed in the tumor by the transmission of microwaves which are adjusted in time, frequency and amplitude to constructively interfer in the desired focus spot.
Using the numerical model of our HT system, we are the first group worldwide that has been able to achieve an adequate brain tumor temperature with desirable precision and without inducing unacceptable hot spots. In the next, inherent step, we aim to develop the prototype of the heating device to verify the achieved numerical results on anthropomorphic phantoms and bring the technology into clinical practice.

PhD position summary/title:– PhD student position on the biaxial thermo-mechanical fatigue resistance of superalloys
The BIFROST project is funded by Vinnova via the NFFP8 programme and is carried out in close collaboration with GKN Aerospace Sweden AB. High performance gas turbine engines require advanced component manufacturing techniques, and in today’s engines cast and forged parts are often welded together. Additive manufacturing could potentially contribute to reduced material usage, high flexibility in the design geometry and tailored anisotropic properties. However, complex geometries are subject to multi-axial stress states and strong thermal gradients in service. Advanced mechanical and microstructural characterisation is required for correct design and life prediction of such components. The BIFROST project will investigate the biaxial thermo-mechanical fatigue resistance of both forged and additively manufactured superalloys for use in aircraft engines. Our uniaxial Thermo-Mechanical Fatigue (TMF) test rig and our advanced biaxial TMF test rig will be the main equipment used together with optical and electron microscopes.

PhD position summary/title:– PhD student position in Materials Physics
Lighting stands for 16.5% of the world’s electricity consumption. Novel and energy efficient lighting is therefore needed to reduce the impact on the environment originating from this enormous energy consumption. Phosphor-converted LEDs have become mainstream for many lighting applications, but commercially used LED phosphors contain rare-earth ions that belong to the EU critical raw materials, therefore, new lighting solutions are urgently needed. This PhD project focuses on the investigation of a novel class of phosphors, called hybrid organic-inorganic perovskites, which are free from rare-earch ions, with the overall aim to unravel relationships between local structure, dynamics, and optical properties in these materials. The project will involve the use of advanced neutron spectroscopy techniques at, e.g., the ISIS Neutron and Muon Source in U.K., Institut Laue-Langevin in France, Japan Proton Accelerator Research Complex, and the future operating European Spallation Source in Sweden. Furthermore, the PhD student will perform first-principles calculations to investigate the structural, electronic, and dynamical properties of the materials, to compare with the experiments.
