(01) Fully Funded PhD Position

PhD position summary/title:–Doctoral student in physical chemistry & environmental chemistry

The composition of Earth’s atmosphere and its ability to respond to pollution and climate change is maintained by oxidation reactions involving short-lived radicals. In particular, thousands of different organic radicals are present in the atmosphere, such as Criegee intermediate (CI), resulting from the reactions of unsaturated organic compounds with Ozone. Despite several decades of research, these CI remain very difficult to observe in laboratory and have never been observed in the atmosphere. Thus many questions remain on their reactions. This PhD position will take place within an on-going European Research Council (ERC) Advanced Project and have for specific objective to investigate the use of Proton Transfer Mass Spectrometry to detect these radicals and to study their reactions in laboratory. The results will bring new information on the reactions of these radicals that will improve the understanding of the atmosphere’s chemistry and oxidation cycles.

PhD position summary/title:–Doctoral student in Nuclear Engineering

Severe accident management strategy in Nordic BWR plants aims to avoid rapid failure of the containment in case of corium melt resale from the reactor vessel. It is assumed that melt will fragment in a deep water pool and form a coolable bed of corium debris. That is, however, not certain. Also, there is a risk that energetic interactions between hot corium melt and water coolant can damage the containment. The goal of this project is to develop methods for addressing the most influential sources of uncertainty in severe accident progression for Nordic BWRs and use ROAAM+ framework to assess the remaining uncertainty in risk assessment.

PhD position summary/title:–Doctoral student in Applied Mathematics (spec. Mathematical Statistics)

This doctoral project focuses on problems at the intersection of probability theory, stochastic analysis and optimization that have bearing on financially motivated problems. Mathematically, the focus could, for example, be on optimal transport problems featuring stochastic constraints, on stochastic processes taking their values in spaces of measures, and on the usage of stochastic control theory for handling optimization problems in such contexts. The overall goal is to identify, address and solve problems in mathematical finance using the aforementioned tools; more precisely, we consider the problems of pricing, hedging and optimal investment in the presence of additional market constraints or under lack of full information. Candidates should take a genuine interest in such applications as well as in the underlying mathematical problems. The precise scope and format of the project will be formed and adjusted in collaboration with the successful candidate. (08) Fully Funded PhD Position

PhD position summary/title:–Doctoral student in integrated transport models for societal outcomes.

The focus of the project is to integrate societal impact assessment of transport solutions with travel behavior models. Travel behaviour models and societal impact assessment methods are built separately and often need particular expertise to synthesize and streamline the findings. This project will address this issue in an effort to explore and develop integrated assessment models with AI. It will address how new technology based solutions (e.g. CAVs, EVs) and nuanced policy interventions (e.g. restricting fossil fuel vehicle use, reducing car parking, introducing carpooling) impact sustainability outcomes, specifically behavioural adaptation, emission targets and equity goals. The methodological approach will be a combination of theory driven and data driven models to build theory driven AI systems. Application of estimates like consumer surplus, value of travel time, demand elasticities will be discussed in the process of critical literature review and model development. The use of big data from traffic censors and social media data mining will be explored.

This project aims to develop novel all-sprayed solar cells. Here, it is crucial to elucidate the underlaying nanostructure-process-functionality (e.g. photovoltaic efficiency) relationship; thus, the work includes design and development of spray deposition for cellulose-based polymer solar cells including in situ experiments at synchrotron radiation facilities, such as MAX IV in Lund, at synchrotrons in Germany, Europe, and USA as well as neutron scattering at European and international neutron sources. We thus expect the student to travel abroad for experimental work.
