(05) Fully Funded PhD Position
PhD position summary/title:–PhD students in Materials Engineering
We are looking for two PhD students in Materials Engineering with a focus on additive manufacturing of metallic materials for aeronautical applications. The positions are financed by Vinnova, the Swedish Armed Forces and the Swedish aviation industry via the national aeronautical research program (NFFP). Both projects aim to ensure that the required mechanical properties are achieved in additively manufactured (AM) materials and that the manufactured components meet the performance and safety requirements of the aerospace industry. Both projects, which are conducted in close collaboration with GKN Aerospace Sweden AB or Saab AB, are described in detail below.
Project CREATE – Creep and dwell-fatigue in AM Ni-base alloys (in collaboration with GKN Aerospace Sweden AB): To safely introduce additive manufacturing (AM) by laser powder bed fusion (L-PBF) in critical aerospace components for operation at elevated temperature, the current underperformance in high temperature integrity compared to cast components must be elucidated. Despite all the recent efforts devoted to AM, printed material by L-PBF shows notoriously lower creep ductility and a higher dwell time fatigue crack growth rate compared to conventional counterparts. This is due to the unique, but from a high temperature properties point of view unfavourable, microstructure that is formed in L-PBF. The aim of this project is to understand the differences in creep and dwell crack propagation behaviour between L-PBF and conventionally manufactured material and reveal the underlying mechanisms responsible for the differences. The purpose is to develop processes and heat treatments that makes L-PBF material at least as damage tolerant as the cast and forged materials at engine conditions. This is crucial for the introduction of L-PBF parts in aero engine applications.
Project DETECT – Defect detection and impact on fatigue behavior for metal AM parts with complex geometries (in collaboration with SAAB AB): To apply additive manufacturing (AM) for critical parts in aerospace systems, a deeper understanding of detectability and impact of process induced defects is essential. The aim this project is to generate fundamental understanding on the detectability of defects using non-destructive testing (NDT), and the impact of various defect conditions on the fatigue performance of additively manufactured parts. By increasing the use of AM, weight reduction and improved performance of aerospace systems could be achieved which will contribute to more sustainable aviation by reducing emissions and lowering the threshold for hybridisation or electrification of smaller aerospace systems. AM is also a key technology for on-demand maintenance and local production of spare parts.

PhD position summary/title:–PhD student in advanced composite materials
We are looking for a driven PhD student at Linköping University (LiU) in the field of advanced fibre reinforced polymer composite materials. The PhD student will investigate manufacturing defects and develop tools and progressive damage models to quantify their effects on the mechanical performance for lighter aeroengines application. The PhD is in collaboration with GKN Aerospace Sweden AB with supervision shared between LiU and GKN Aerospace. The project aims to support the development of future, lighter aero engines, thereby contributing to the sustainable development of air travel.
The PhD student will explore how manufacturing parameters affect the generation and density of defects in composite laminates. The impact of these defects on mechanical performance and damage propagation will be investigated. The PhD student will also develop methodologies to predict the mechanical performance of damaged composite laminates. This research will make the PhD student a future expert in the characterization of damage in advanced composites for high-performance applications, with knowledge in manufacturing, classical laminate theory, and advanced modelling.
As a PhD student, you will engage in both experimental and theoretical research, while also disseminating your findings at national and international conferences and through publications in scientific journals. You will be part of a cross-disciplinary department and growing team at IEI and Linköping University.
