(04) Fully Funded PhD Position

PhD position summary/title:–Aero-Engine Experimental Aerodynamics PhD

This is a full funded PhD (fees and bursary) in propulsion system aerodynamics in collaboration with Rolls-Royce and EPSRC. Fundamental understanding of aerodynamic flows is at the heart of aero-engine design and a key research area is the ability to measure complex flow fields. Within that context, the overall aim of this PhD is to further develop non-intrusive laser-based flow measurement systems with new event-based cameras for stereo PIV measurements. This will be used to characterise the dynamic flow distortion within confined regions such as convoluted aero-engine intakes. This is expected to yield significant benefits in aerodynamic measurement quality where there is a keen interest in obtaining measurements close to surfaces.

(07) Fully Funded PhD Position

PhD position summary/title:–Design optimization of recoilless disruptor de-armers enabling precise neutralization of Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs) and Unexploded Bombs (UXBs)

This PhD is designed to investigate a lighter, next generation alternative material to reduce the weight of unloaded stainless-steel disrupters and help improve control and stability performance of the same.

This project is designed to address a key business challenge for the Industrial Partner, Richmond Defence Systems, who have world-class expertise in the design / manufacture of products / solutions for counter IED and EOD applications.

It is anticipated that the PhD would be conducted via a unique, inter-linked and exciting combination of practical experiments and simulations involving scaled firings, use of compressed gas-guns to characterise materials, computational modelling, and microstructural analysis. Facilities across Cranfield’s key sites (Shrivenham, Cranfield and COTEC) would be employed as required.

(08) Fully Funded PhD Position

PhD position summary/title:–Experimental and Numerical Study of Parameters Affecting the Wake Dynamics of a Simplified Car: Effects of Roughness – Turbulence – Yaw Angle

Air quality is a major public health issue worldwide. Two origins can be identified for pollutant particles that emanated from road transport vehicles. The dynamics of exhaust and non-exhaust pollutants released into the atmosphere in the wake of passenger cars are still poorly understood. An enhanced understanding of these physical processes involved in the dispersion of pollutants is essential. The flow topology must be accurately described and analysed while both the flow and the interaction of the flow and particles must be better understood. Our ability to find solutions to either limit the infiltration of pollutants into car cabins (and thus reduce the exposure of the occupants) or to identify areas where they can accumulate (areas to be avoided by pedestrians and cyclists) depends on these issues. This is the context of this PhD project.

(10) Fully Funded PhD Position

PhD position summary/title:–Hydrogen for future space transportation PhD

R2T2 is an integrated doctoral programme run across eight UK universities, which seeks to provide the opportunity to pursue a PhD in space propulsion technologies. The programme is fully funded, and a budget of approximately £50k will be available to support practical experiments, including hotfire, cold-flow, wind tunnel experiments, or similar, according to the specific project’s needs. Where hotfire is indicated, technical oversight will be put in place, and the use of the MachLab test site at Machrihanish Airbase will be offered, although not required. In addition, a practical and online training scheme will be put in place, designed to offer an introduction to the skills required in the space launch industry. These will likely include project management skills, propellant handling, gas/cryo safety, and many more. Parts of this training programme will be delivered at Westcott.

(11) Fully Funded PhD Position

PhD position summary/title:–Modelling capability for chemical aging of gun propellants

Conventional propellants degrade over time at rates depending on factors such as their composition as well as external variables like storage temperature. Unfavourable conditions could reduce by many years the service life of munitions, as it could lead to spontaneous ignition and unplanned explosions with huge consequences. Understanding, measuring and predicting the propellants’ degradation mechanisms under different environmental conditions is vital for the safe storage of munitions.

About Cranfield University, England – Official Website

Cranfield University is a British postgraduate-only public research university specialising in science, engineering, design, technology and management. Cranfield was founded as the College of Aeronautics (CoA) in 1946. Through the 1950s and 1960s, the development of aircraft research led to growth and diversification into other areas such as manufacturing and management, and in 1967, to the founding of the Cranfield School of Management. In 1969, the College of Aeronautics was renamed the Cranfield Institute of Technology, was incorporated by royal charter, gained degree awarding powers, and became a university. In 1993, it adopted its current name.

Cranfield University has two campuses: the main campus is at Cranfield, Bedfordshire, and the second is at the Defence Academy of the United Kingdom at Shrivenham, southwest Oxfordshire. The main campus is unique in the United Kingdom (and Europe) for having its own airport – Cranfield Airport – and its own aircraft, used for teaching and research.
