PhD position summary/title:–  PhD position in Machine learning in science and society A Dangerous Toy?

The same machine learning methods that are unprecedently used across large areas of science are also wide ranging across society. ML models are determining what news we see, risk scores for fraud, and more. LLMs are structuring our knowledge with ChatGPT integrated with Bing search and Quora answers, even despite well documented cases of ChatGPT ‘hallucinations.’

Current approaches to evaluating ML models in society have clustered around issues of fairness, bias, problems of justice by introducing ML models at scale, the right to explanation, and more. While all these issues remain important, there is a deep worry that ML models might not be providing us with genuine information or knowledge in the first place. Before we can make informed decisions about when and where ML models should be used across society, we need to understand their epistemic value.

The aim of this PhD project is to bring methods and resources from philosophy of science (e.g. idealisation and representation) to answer important questions in AI ethics regarding appropriate use of ML models in society. How do ML models idealize social phenomena? When do the idealisations of ML models get in the way of acceptable use?

(02) Fully Funded PhD Position 

PhD position summary/title:– PhD Candidate: Autonomous Decision Making, Responsibility and Liability

Over four years, you will conduct PhD research with guidance from a supervisory team, led by Professor Elbert de Jong. The objective of your research is to generate relevant results for Dutch society and the legal community. The project falls within the Utrecht Centre for Accountability and Liability Law’s research programme and is part of an NWO-funded initiative on the robust and safe control of remotely operated offshore vehicles. You will work in collaboration with an interdisciplinary consortium, including the Philosophy and Ethics of Technology group at Eindhoven University of Technology.

A clear ethical-legal framework of responsibilities and liabilities regarding the utilisation of semi-autonomous remote Vehicles is crucial to facilitate their (safe) development and application. This project investigates the ethical-legal framework that guides the allocation of responsibility and accountability amid complexity and uncertainty. Specifically, it addresses the interplay between algorithmic decisions, operational consequences, and ethical-legal aspects of accountability and liability. A further description of the project will be distributed upon request. Your letter of motivation should ideally express what appeals to you about this subject, and the ideas you have about the execution of the PhD research.

In addition to your research, you will share knowledge by participating in and helping organise research meetings, both internally and externally. Part of your time will also be allocated to training and development, including PhD courses, as well as a small amount of teaching experience.

PhD position summary/title:– PhD Position in Nanopositioning with Optimal Optical Information

The aim of this project is to extend our information-centered optical measurement strategy, both mathematically and practically, to cases where multiple parameters need to be extracted from complex measurements. For instance, you will investigate what insights can be gained from measurements that involve multiple illuminations, sensor channels, viewing angles, polarisation channels, and wavelengths. Collaborating with local experts and our industrial partner, ASM Pacific Technology, you will adapt this theoretical framework to real-world applications, particularly in measuring the placement of bonds and wires on integrated circuits (ICs).

This PhD project encompasses a wide range of technologies and approaches, including optics, interfacing, information theory, and data processing using Python, alongside machine learning frameworks such as PyTorch. We expect you to demonstrate MSc-level knowledge in at least one of these areas and to be open and curious about exploring the others.

Your work is expected to lead to peer-reviewed publications in open-access journals, culminating in a PhD thesis that contextualises your research, and which you will defend at the end of the project.

The research will focus on the Rhine basin, a transboundary river system where trade-offs exist between national water and hydroelectric needs, impacting downstream water levels and increasing the risk of conflicts. However, managing water use across borders requires careful coordination, as unilateral actions by one country can significantly affect others.

PhD position summary/title:– PhD Position on Multimedia Analysis in the HAICu Project

We are looking for a PhD and a postdoctoral researcher to work within the multi-partner HAICu NWA-ORC project. This vacancy is for the PhD position, the Postdoc position is being advertised simultaneously: Postdoc Position on Multimedia Analysis in the HAICu Project. There are two research topics tackled in parallel for this project (see description below). Based on the applications, the topics will be assigned at PhD or Postdoc level. Both researchers will collaborate within the project.

This project is implemented by an ambitious consortium including many universities, knowledge institutions, archives, foundations, cultural institutions and business partners in the Netherlands. It aims to use improved access to digital heritage to tutor the Digital Citizen in the use of big data. It brings together AI researchers and Digital Humanities scholars to seek solutions to the problem of inadequate data-mining tools we have, aiming to derive information from the continuous stream of data about the present and the past. This will help citizens and other regular users, heritage curators and journalists who are interested in tapping heritage collections, as well as civic organizations and authorities interested in improving civic participation.

PhD position summary/title:– PhD Impact of Digital Technologies on Public Education (in The Netherlands)

Over the past two decades, Big Tech companies have steadily increased their influence over public education. This influence has become particularly evident with the rise of platforms and artificial intelligence (AI). Big Tech conglomerates are restructuring the education sector by incorporating new generative AI (GenAI) infrastructures and applications into their own educational services, while simultaneously integrating them with third-party edtech vendors.

As AI-driven tools and platforms become structurally embedded into schools’ digital environments and practices, the existing infrastructures of public education are increasingly pulled into the globalized ecosystems of Big Tech. In this project you will critically investigate the structural convergence of Public Education, Big Tech and AI in the Netherlands, and study the implications of this process for reshaping public education.

During the first six months of the project, you will work on a detailed research plan based on an extended version of the ‘Project Description’ above, which you will carry out independently during the remainder of the project. In the second and/or third year of the project you may be asked to teach a few classes, but no more than 10% of your appointment.

(10) Fully Funded PhD Position 

PhD position summary/title:– Three PhD positions for the ERC project, ‘Making Sense of Communities of Arms’

ARMIES is a five-year project supported by a European Research Council (ERC) Starting Grant. The project aims to establish a new research agenda that centralises the firearm as a sensational actant that shapes everyday practices and relations, creates divergent communities, and (re)produces power structures within local and global spheres. The project centres around an ethnographic analysis of the everyday deployment of firearms and their societal impact. It examines and compares the various ways firearms produce communities and focuses on groups that are overlooked in the field of gun studies, such as gun owners’ associations and hunting clubs. ARMIES hypothesises that these communities are disruptive and transformative ones that exert tremendous power.

The project members are guided by the following research question: ‘How do firearms produce communities, how do these communities relate to one another, and what is their societal impact?’ This question will be answered through a comparative and multiscalar analysis of such communities and their members in Brazil, Germany, and South Africa, and global communities, such as international disarmament organisations. Due to the highly embodied, sensational, and affective nature of firearms, ARMIES will use and develop a multisensorial ethnographic approach (and toolkit) that comprises ethnographic methods that explicitly target the senses.

We seek three PhD candidates who have the necessary research experience and language skills to conduct one of the subprojects in Brazil, South Africa and Germany.
