(08) Fully Funded PhD Position

PhD position summary/title:–Doctoral student in Aerosol Technology with Focus on airborne emissions from recycled materials for construction

Aerosols are mixtures of gases and particles, where the air we breathe is a common example. Exposure to aerosol particles (measured as PM2.5) is today the largest environmental risk factor in Europe. Workplace exposure is also a significant risk factor, where risks associated with the dusting from secondary use of unbound materials are foreseen to increase in the transition to a circular economy.

In a circular economy, waste streams and residual materials must be utilized to replace primary raw materials. In the coming years Sweden aims to go from 5% of the recycled materials in our products to 95%. This rapid transition will result in new risks of emissions to the air from potentially polluted waste streams – both for occupational exposure (exposure of workers) and for the uncontrolled spread of toxic substances into the outer environment.

(12) Fully Funded PhD Position

PhD position summary/title:–Doktoral student in astronomy

One of the most elusive questions in modern astronomy has finally become tractable – the origin of the thick disk in the Milky Way. The presence of a thick disk matters because it tells us about the dynamical history of the galaxy. The existence of thick stellar disks in addition to a thin stellar disk is ubiquitous in the local Universe. Several potential formation channels for thick disks have been suggested. A number of major blocking points have inhibited progress in differentiating between these different channels. To make advances we need to make use of observational data to test the models. We will take advantage of the astrometric data from ESA’s Gaia satellite in combination with spectroscopic data emerging from ground-breaking stellar surveys SDSS-V, 4MOST and WEAVE to understand the formation of the thick disk.

(13) Fully Funded PhD Position

PhD position summary/title:–Doctoral student focussed on methane fluxes from forests and their impact on the global atmosphere

This project will aim to improve understanding of the methane (CH4) carbon budget through a combination of new measurement and modelling work. CH4 is emitted from a variety of sources and processes, balanced by chemical destruction in the troposphere, stratosphere, and through processes controlled by soil and plant microbes (lifetime of ~10 years). Although anthropogenic emissions have been a clear driver of the rising atmospheric concentration, changes in the rate of atmospheric growth are not understood, which ultimately hampers predictions on future scenarios of this potent greenhouse gas and its impact on climate over the next decades and century.

The global sinks responsible for methane’s destruction are particularly hard to quantify, whether due to poor understanding of the tropospheric reactive radical distribution and variation, or the undersampling of terrestrial microbial sinks leading to large uncertainties when scaled up globally. This PhD project aims to improve our understanding of CH4’s sinks through creation of new observations including measurements of isotope ratios, analysis of existing datasets, and interpretation through atmospheric modelling. Global scale models of atmospheric methane will be set up to simulate methane and its isotope ratios for comparison against observatons available from the last years and decades. Field studies focusing on biosheric sinks and their ability to fractionate isotopes of methane will be undertaken with an aim to improve understanding of their influence on the global methane budget. Field measurement campaigns will be developed alongside the modelling work, in partularly to understand the role of forests in removing atmospheric methane. The student will be directly involved in the implementation and maintenance of greenhouse gas measurements and carry out their own studies at experimental sites.

(15) Fully Funded PhD Position

PhD position summary/title:–Doctoral student in Medical Radiation Physics

Radiotherapy is a cornerstone in cancer therapy today. Thanks to the fact that we nowadays can give a very high dose of radiation to a small, well-defined volume, radiotherapy has also proven to be an alternative treatment of other severe diseases such as ventricular tachycardia. Recently published material emphasized that further research into how to avoid irradiating healthy tissue in the heart during a so-called stereotactic radioablation is needed. Specific challenges are the interacting movements from the patient’s heartbeat and breathing.

This project focuses on methods to optimize motion management for these patients. At our disposal, we have modern equipment such as an MR-linac, a CT-linac (Tomotherapy) and other equipment optimized for on-line imaging and stereotaxic treatments. The project is not limited to existing equipment but aims also to develop the future optimal radiation treatment of ventricular tachycardia, including, among other things, machine learning (ML) and faster imaging- and radiation deliveries individually adapted to the cardio motion. The project is interdisciplinary, and supervision will take place in a multidisciplinary group.

PhD position summary/title:–Doctoral student in Biomedical Engineering with a focus on mechanobiological modeling of tendon tissues

Biomedical engineering comprises theoretical and experimental activities based in engineering and addressing issues tied to medicine and biology.

This doctoral student project is focusing on soft musculoskeletal tissues (e.g. tendons) connect or transmit forces during movement in the body. The load-bearing capacity largely comes from the collagen network and an extensive amount of water. The Achilles tendon is the largest and the most injured tendon in the human body. Ruptures often occur during recreational sport activities but can also be a result of ageing. Mechanical loading is a prerequisite for tendon healing. Healing of tendon ruptures could be improved by elucidating how loading affects the mechanobiological aspects of tendon healing. The PhD student will work within a larger project with the scope to elucidate how mechanical loading affects tendon regeneratio

PhD position summary/title:–Doctoral student in Energy Sciences with a focus on hydrogen combustion engines

Hydrogen-powered internal combustion engines are an important component of the green transition and are seen as one of the primary options for sustainable transport alongside electrification.

This project focuses on hydrogen-powered internal combustion engines, which have the potential to combine energy efficiency and climate neutrality with zero CO2 emissions. In addition to reducing the future heavy demand for batteries in the transport sector, these engines could become particularly important for achieving climate goals in long-distance, heavy-duty transport, which is difficult to electrify.

The project’s aim is to investigate flow and mixing phenomena in spark-ignited, direct-injected hydrogen engines and their impact on ignition and combustion processes. The mixing process of air and hydrogen is fundamental to achieving high efficiency without the occurrence of knocking. The research will be conducted using available heavy duty research engines, enabling traditional engine testing as well as in-depth analysis of combustion processes inside the cylinder through high-speed imaging and other optical techniques. Additional tools, such as flow simulations (CFD), will also be utilized.

PhD position summary/title:–Marie Curie – PhD student to research group Experimental Oncology

We subscribe to the view that a tumour should be considered as a communicating organ in its own right, comprising multiple cell types that collectively evolve into a clinically manifested and deadly disease. Our overarching aim is to functionally define the cellular elements of a tumour. In the current project, microniches orchestrated by cancer-associated fibroblasts (CAFs) will be divulged and interrogated for function during metastatic dissemination. By a refinement of current state-of-the-art technologies, our studies enable inferences about molecular interactions between specialised cell types in confined cellular niches. With a unique map of microenvironmental niches as a backdrop, the project will confront previously unresolved questions in tumour biology by: 1) Defining the dynamic changes in the tumour architecture manifested in the composition of CAF microniches at different phases of tumorigenesis, from initiation to distant spread, and in the face of treatment, 2) Identifying precision drug targets based on CAF microniches to prevent cancer dissemination and drug resistance and 3) Discovering biomarkers from CAF microniches for improved diagnostication of cancer.
