Postdoc summary/title:– Post Doctoral Fellow in Ophthalmology
A postdoctoral position is now available in the Department of Ophthalmology in the School of Medicine at Indiana University. Our research focus is retinal cell biology with the goal of discovering small molecule therapy for photoreceptor degenerative disorders. To elucidate the disease mechanisms, we genetically dissect the process of photoreceptor morphogenesis and maintenance in vertebrate animals. Our laboratory pioneered real-time imaging of proteins and small molecules within the retina, and takes advantage of state of the art confocal/multiphoton/superresolution microscopy techniques. Our research also heavily depends on the tissue culture system to biochemically study the components required for photoreceptor morphogenesis/maintenance.
The applicant is expected to be highly independent and be capable of designing experiments and conducting hypothesis-based research projects. The candidate should have a strong background in cell biology, molecular biology, or biochemistry. Knowledge of fluorescence microscopy is favorable, although not necessary. Salary will be commensurate with experience and will adhere to current Indiana School of Medicine guidelines.
A post-doctoral research position is available in the laboratory of Dr. Makram Obeid. The postdoctoral fellow will test research hypotheses in rodent seizure models and cell cultures, primarily utilizing molecular and cell biology techniques. The Obeid lab investigates the mechanisms of seizure emergence and their effects on cognitive and behavioral neurodevelopment in rodent seizure models. Our primary goal is to identify molecular targets for novel treatment strategies. The laboratory employs a variety of molecular techniques, longterm continuous EEG monitoring in rodents, and neurobehavioral testing panels. The postdoctoral fellow is expected to independently plan and conduct experiments under the guidance of the PI, using molecular and cellular biology techniques that include, but are not limited to, cell culture, western blotting, PCR, gene knockdown and overexpression, immunofluorescence, and immunohistochemistry. Laboratory work will involve animal handling and the potential participation in neurobehavioral testing. Work may also involve electrode implantation surgery and EEG recording in rodents (initially semi-independently under the PI’s supervision). The postdoctoral fellow is expected to collect and analyze data, summarize findings, and participate/assist in the preparation of scientific manuscripts, abstracts, posters, and possibly grants. The duties also include training lab personal, participating in laboratory and equipment maintenance, ordering supplies as needed, performing literature review, updating research protocols and design, and potentially developing new ideas that serve the research goals set by the PI.

Postdoc summary/title:– Postdoctoral – Spinal Cord and Brain Injury Research (Wei Wu Lab)
Indiana University School of Medicine is seeking to fill a postdoctoral position in Dr. Wei Wu’s laboratory at the Stark Neurosciences Research Institute and Department of Neurological Surgery. The project aims to investigate the potential of a in vivo reprogramming approach to repair the spinal cord from traumatic injury in a rodent model. Specifically, the study will explore whether this approach can activate multiple intrinsic and extrinsic pathways to synergistically provide unique and effective neuroregeneration, ultimately improving motor and sensory functions after spinal cord injury (SCI). The project will employ a wide range of neuroscience techniques, including SCI animal models, in vivo reprogramming, optogenetics, chemogenetics, and electromyography to measure muscle function, transsynaptic neuronal tracing, motor and sensory functional evaluation, pharmacological interventions, and molecular biology and histology.
The ideal candidate should have a strong interest in neuroscience and experience in working with the rodent central nervous system. They should be able to work independently, highly motivated, and enthusiastic. The postdoctoral fellow will be responsible for conducting experiments, analyzing data, writing manuscripts, preparing fellowship grants (though salary support is guaranteed), and assisting in mentoring students and technicians. A full-time Post-Doctoral Research position is available in the Department of Neurological Surgery to conduct studies on the tumor microenvironment in primary (glioma, medulloblastoma) and secondary brain tumors. We will use replicating retroviral vector (RRV) gene therapies to interrogate treatment efficacy and immune responses in the tumor microenvironment. Our research will also focus on the effects of oxygen tension (hypoxia vs normoxia) on the efficacy of viral therapy, chemotherapy, and immune responses both in vitro and in vivo. The Norlander laboratory is searching for a highly motivated individual to fill a postdoctoral fellow position within the laboratory. The laboratory of Dr. Allison E. Norlander is based in the Department of Anatomy, Cell Biology, and Physiology at the Indiana University School of Medicine located in Indianapolis, Indiana. The Norlander lab investigates the mechanisms through which selected mediators may augment immune cell dysfunction caused by inflammation in models of hypertension or allergic airway inflammation. The goal of the Witczak Lab is to identify the molecular and cellular mechanisms that control skeletal muscle glucose and protein metabolism. The selected candidate will participate in a team working with mouse models of type 2 diabetes or exercise, surgical techniques to alter gene expression or muscle size, radioactive and non-radioactive metabolic tracer studies, as well as a variety of biochemical and molecular biology assays (e.g. immunoblots, PCR, enzyme activity, etc.). The Dementia Laboratory, co-led by Drs. Bernardino Ghetti and Kathy L. Newell of the Indiana University School of Medicine Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine Division of Neuropathology, has immediate full-time openings for one or more outstanding, highly motivated post-doctoral research fellows with special interest in molecular pathology of neurodegeneration related to aging as well as sporadic and genetically-determined dementias and motor neuron diseases. These include Alzheimer’s Disease, Frontotemporal Dementias, Parkinson’s Disease, Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis and Prion Diseases. This fellowship, provides the opportunity to develop and expand knowledge in the neuropathology of human neurodegenerative diseases using light microscopy, immunohistochemistry, electron microscopy, immunoelectron microscopy, fluorescent multiplex immunohistochemistry, digital spatial profiling, quantitative digital image analysis,and cryo electron microscopy. Additionally, fellows have the opportunity to participate in and develop multidisciplinary projects integrating neuropathology with cutting-edge brain imaging, clinical neurology, protein chemistry, and molecular genetics as well as communicate and collaborate with leading researchers from around the world. Fellows may focus on one or more misfolded proteins and acquire an understanding of co-pathologies of amyloids simultaneously involving a single anatomical system.
The Dementia Laboratory’s focus is on the molecular neuropathology of neurodegenerative diseases. Our aims are to expand our knowledge of the mechanisms of neurodegeneration. Neurodegenerative diseases may first affect language, cognition, motor systems, and emotions. It is necessary to identify the anatomical areas and systems primarily affected. Specifically, we strive to understand the earliest stages of intracellular alterations in the anatomical areas whose function appears to be involved in the earliest clinical symptoms. From there, we follow the progression and spread of the neurodegenerative process to anatomical areas that are synaptically connected to the regions primarily affected. Our efforts help to clarify the architecture of the neurodegenerative process. Neuropathology, biochemistry and molecular genetics aid in elucidating the stages of neurodegeneration in individual anatomical areas through the analysis of diseases studied postmortem on individuals who were at different stages of the disease process at the time of their passing.
The successful candidate must have a Ph.D. in Human Genetics or a related field. The Clinical Laboratory R&D Scientist will serve as an active member of the clinical lab and provide scientific support to ongoing method/assay development and validation for our growing high-complexity CAP-accredited and CLIA-certified diagnostic laboratories. The IUGTL and its core laboratory sections of Molecular Genetics, Cytogenetics, Pharmacogenomics, Diagnostic Genomics and Biochemical Genetics, offer comprehensive genetic testing for the diagnosis of new disorders and the ongoing management of disease, and support research efforts for faculty both inside and outside of IU School of Medicine.
The ideal candidate will have experience with both analytical wet-bench techniques and tertiary analysis (interpretation, filtering, and annotation of variant calls) associated with diagnostic genetic testing, primarily using Next Generation Sequencing (NGS) but extending to molecular cytogenetics methods. In this role, the Clinical Laboratory R&D Scientist will prepare validation plans, participate in assay development, draft standard operating procedures, analyze and interpret clinical data, guide decision making or troubleshooting of processes, and maintain appropriate documentation according to the required scientific and regulatory standards. Under the supervision of the IUGTL directors, this role will also assist with research projects that report new gene discovery, variant reclassification and lead or contribute to scientific publications. The Department of Medical and Molecular Genetics at Indiana University School of Medicine is seeking applicants at the Postdoctoral Fellow level to work in the area of genetic epidemiology. The successful candidate will work under the supervision of Dr. Tae-Hwi Schwantes-An whose lab focuses on cardiometabolic diseases such as alcohol-related liver disease, metabolic dysfunction associated steatotic liver diseases, and pulmonary arterial hypertension. Additionally, the candidate will have access to Indiana Biobank, a 50,000 participant cohort with genetic and linked electronic health records dataset. A postdoctoral fellow position (all levels) is immediately available in Dr. Tran’s lab for highly motivated and talented applicants who are interested in understanding the mechanisms of blood disorders and developing therapeutic approaches for such diseases. The successful candidate will perform research in the NIH-funded project aiming to understand the mechanism of Fanconi Anemia and develop gene therapy using the CRISPR/Cas9 system. This project will closely collaborate with Dr. Reuben Kapur, director of the Wells Center for Pediatric Research.
This research extensively uses cell and molecular biology techniques including mouse handling. Candidates with experience in mouse models in hematopoiesis/hematological malignancies and multi-channel flow cytometry will be very competitive, but not required.
