The project “German Contribution to ClimAte Projections for CMIP7 – AR7 Fast Track: DECK and ScenarioMIP Simulations” (CAP7) funded by the Federal Ministry of Education and Science (BMBF) aims to make a highly visible national contribution to CMIP7 with the Earth system models developed and applied in Germany. In this sub-project, the ICON model, in a new configuration developed for simulations on climate-relevant time scales named ICON-XPP (eXtended Prediction and Projection) will be further developed. In addition, in ICON-XPP the nitrogen cycle and the interactive carbon cycle are also implemented, so that emission-driven climate projections, which are recommended as preferred in CMIP7, can be carried out for the first time.

The main focus of this project part at Universität of Hamburg will to enhance the representation of ocean biogeochemical processes and carbon storage in the Hamburg Ocean Carbon Cycle Model (HAMOCC). HAMOCC will be tested and calibrated in ICON-XPP, in concentration-driven simulations, as well as in the model configuration enabled by interactive representation of air-sea and air-land CO2 fluxes and prognostic representation of CO2 concentration the in the atmosphere. With these novel simulations we aim to assess the representation of carbon-climate feedbacks and ocean storage of carbon under changing CO2 emissions.

The research associate will examine Effects of acclimation, dispersal, and establishment on diversity patterns of mosses and lichens under climate change. These organisms are key for ecosystem functioning in many regions of the world, but mosses and lichens are seldom represented in process-based dynamic vegetation models (DGMVs) that are used for prediction of future vegetation patterns and functions at global scale. In particular, processes that may limit range shifts under climate change, such as dispersal and establishment, or mechanisms of acclimation to altered climate at the individual level, are missing in DGVMs.

The aim of this project is to estimate how these potentially limiting processes affect future distribution patterns of mosses and lichens, focusing on their functional diversity and the associated ecosystem functions. To this end, an established DGVM of mosses and lichens will be extended by mechanisms of dispersal, establishment and acclimation and evaluated by means of laboratory and small-scale field experiments.

The findings will not only provide new insights into the responses of mosses and lichens to climate change, but will also add new perspectives on the general advancement of DGVMs.

Required teaching associated with this position amounts to 2,5 LVS (course hours per week).

The increasing release of antibiotics, biocides, toxins, plasticizers and microplastics has a direct and indirect impact on microbial diversity and, through selection, promotes the spread of bacterial resistance mechanisms causing a high risk for human and animal health. In addition, climate change and other man-made factors increase and speed up these effects. The MOMOBIO-2 project will develop very detailed mainly omic-based data sets and models to track, monitor and predict the urban microbiota and changes in its biodiversity and resistance profile along the wastewater streams of the City of Hamburg as well as urban water bodies. Our main goal is to use changes in microbial biodiversity as an indirect measure for animal and human health.

The candidate will represent the functional diversity of microbial communities in a process-based ecological modelling approach and simulate the impacts of different environmental factors, in particular stressors, on shifts in community composition. The model will then be applied to predict abundances of potential pathogens that are relevant for human health, thereby integrating the experimental work in other parts of the MOMOBIO-2 project.

Functional diversity will be explicitly modelled based on population dynamics of a large number of microbial functional types that differ with regard to several key traits, based on existing eco-evolutionary models. The model will be parameterized using data on reaction rates and the simulated abundances will be validated against observational data, collected in other work packages of the project. The model will focus on evolving resistomes, xenobiotic gene loads, and virulence factors. The spread of antibiotic resistance in microbial communities will be scaled up along the flowpath toward the Elbe river in response to changes in stressor levels.

In this project, you will contribute to the development and assessment of deep learning algorithms to infer internal tidal signals or energetic metrics related to internal tides. Oceanic internal tides, generated by astronomically forced tides flowing over sloping bottom topography, are crucial in the oceanic energy balance, contributing to vertical mixing of nutrients and tracers, and sustaining the ocean circulation. Extracting information about internal tides from satellite observations remains challenging, due to sparse temporal sampling and the complexity of the underlying dynamics. Recently, deep learning algorithms have shown promises in handling this task. You will help us further develop and evaluate them. The deep learning algorithms will be trained on realistic modelling data, and can serve as efficient diagnostic tools to be applied to both modeling data and real observational data. The work will be done in close collaboration with experts in mathematical methods, ocean modeling and observational oceanography.

Spin systems are an intriguing breeding ground for exotic and topological quasiparticle excitations like anyons and quantum skyrmions. This project utilizes artificial neural networks to simulate the dynamics of topological excitations in spin systems and aims to find fast-time-scale coherent control of these quasiparticles, which has previously only been demonstrated on an adiabatic, i.e., infinitely slow, time scale. The project connects dynamics, topological excitations, and quantum machine learning as its three key aspects.

One paper of your dissertation must be in sole authorship. You participate at the regular meetings and workshops of RU BISC, attend one summer school at least to further develop your methodological skills, and interact with the professor (primary advisor), with the other researchers in RU BISC, other doctoral students and postdocs in the team, and with junior and senior researchers in the department and faculty.
