The Department of Agricultural, Food and Nutritional Science in the Faculty of Agricultural, Life and Environmental Sciences is looking for a full-time Postdoctoral Fellow to work with Dr. Ruurd Zijlstra, Professor in Swine & Carbohydrate Nutrition. Research in the group is focused on starch and fiber nutrition and feedstuff characterization and development.

Dr. Osmar Zaiane, professor in the Department of Computing Science and Fellow at the Alberta Machine Intelligence Institute (Amii), has an immediate opening for a postdoctoral fellow to work on the research project “Machine Malfunction Prediction and Machine Adaptation using Machine Learning”. This project investigates effective means to automatically predict machine failures and strategies to adapt a malfunctioning machine to continue its mission before maintenance can be performed. The project also relates to machine adaptation to environment dynamics and human collaborators. The research applies Machine learning and Data Mining and focuses on Reinforcement Learning techniques to achieve these goals. Amii is one of three centers of excellence in the Pan-Canadian AI strategy, and is a world-renowned leader in artificial intelligence research, advancing the field of AI through ground-breaking discoveries and transformative technologies.

This position is designed for a highly motivated early-career researcher with a proven track-record of conducting interdisciplinary cereal research to further strengthen capabilities of the Cereal Breeding Lab (CBL) led by Dr. Gurcharn Brar of AFNS. The responsibilities will entail executing research activities across a multitude of projects requiring expertise on mendelian genetics, population genetics, genomics, molecular biology, and metabolite profiling. The incumbent will add additional strength to the CBL by conducting research to develop novel agronomic traits in wheat and barley, contribute to designing experiments and writing research grants, mentor students and staff, present research at national and international conferences, and publish research in peer-reviewed journals. 

We are seeking applications for multiple Senior Researcher positions, available immediately for exceptionally motivated Postdoctoral Fellows or PhD students. These positions are for a 1 year term with the possibility of renewal for up to 3 years. This is a unique opportunity to contribute to a pioneering project applying artificial intelligence and machine learning to the development of RNA vaccines against emerging viral threats such as Influenza, Lassa, and Orthopox viruses. 

Project Overview: This ambitious project utilizes self-amplifying RNA (saRNA) technology, which offers the potential for more potent immune responses at lower doses compared to traditional mRNA vaccines. Our approach focuses on the use of structural RNA bioinformatics to design vaccine candidates and predict the effects of viral mutations, enhancing our ability to respond rapidly to evolving pandemic threats. 

 Applications are invited for appointment as a Post-doctoral Fellow in the Department of Pediatrics, to commence as soon as possible for one year, with the possibility of renewal. The appointee will have the opportunity to work with both local and national multi-disciplinary teams to enhance the healthcare outcomes of at-risk infants. The appointee will be involved in the research activities related to the Canadian Neonatal Network, Evidence-based Practice Quality Improvement, and other provincial, national and local databases. These studies are currently funded through a CIHR grant and other provincial/ local research funding. We are seeking a postdoctoral researcher for a collaborative project jointly led by Prof Nidhi Hegde (University of Alberta, Amii) and Prof Dhanya Sridhar (Université de Montréal, MILA) and funded through the Canadian Institute for Advanced Research (CIFAR).

The focus of the project is on strategic classification and causal models. In particular, we aim to study long-term fairness and develop robust learning algorithms in a strategic classification framework.

The Foundations of Robust and Trustworthy Machine Learning (FORT) lab led by Prof Nidhi Hegde has an immediate opening for a postdoctoral researcher. The FORT lab focuses on a fundamental approach to developing robust and trustworthy algorithms for machine learning. This largely applies to notions of privacy and fairness, but also to more general concepts of robustness and stability. Applications range from supervised learning to bandits to language models to image segmentation. The current open position is for a project on Distributionally Robust Optimization as applied to these themes. 

The appointment will initially be for one year with a salary starting at $40,000 (CAD) per year with annual increase and benefits, one-time airfare, and $2000 per year for professional development. This post is renewable and subject to satisfactory performance. Starting date is negotiable but preferred start dates are between October 2024 to January 2025.

Highly motivated and collaborative team players to build a diverse research community focused on the islet microenvironment. Successful applicants will utilize their experience in cutting edge techniques working with human islets, organoid and/or vascular culture models, live cell and confocal microscopy and analysis of large datasets. This position offers the opportunity to contribute to innovative research in child development and participation through brain-computer interface (BCI) technology. We seek candidates passionate about the clinical implementation of non-invasive (BCIs) for neurodiverse children and youth. This interdisciplinary patient and family-centered research involves medicine, rehabilitation, and engineering faculties, aiming to enhance participation and development through play, mobility, and communication for people with neurological impairments.

A background in rehabilitation sciences, neuroscience, or developmental psychology is preferred. Successful candidates will have strong communication, collaboration, and coordination skills to work effectively with patients, families, researchers, clinicians, and industry partners and contribute successfully to this intersectoral research.

The successful applicants will participate and lead research that applies advanced statistical, AI and ML techniques to large populational health data of patients with mental and substance use disorders. Current and potential projects include two main directions: 1) Individualized prediction of mental and substance use disorders and overdoses and associated health and economical outcomes in the population using health, survey and biological data; 2) Implementation of ML models through interactions with multiple stakeholders and people with living and lived experiences.

The successful applicants will have the opportunity of supervised access to several public and government/institution owned datasets, including large (over 4 million people) de-identified health data from Alberta. In this context, there are excellent opportunities for shared mentorship and collaboration with several PIs in psychiatry and computing science, including the Alberta machine intelligence institute (Amii).

The successful applicants will play a leadership role for several research projects in computational psychiatry, develop and participate in preparation of research grant proposals, assist in the supervision and training of other personnel including technologists, graduate students, other lab members and scientific collaborators. The successful applicant will also have the opportunity to work directly with our partners in Ministries of Alberta Government, Alberta Health Services (AHS) and Canadian Mental Health Association Edmonton, as well as international partners.
